Baby girl name Nancy

Everyone hates the name but I love it, what do you all think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Farrar · 16/12/2017 15:23

And I also took the inspiration from Stranger Things 😉

Madbengalmum · 16/12/2017 15:23

I just think of oliver twist, but I don't hate the name.

GwenStaceyRocks · 16/12/2017 15:24

I immediately thought of Stranger Things. I think it's a nice name but I expect there will be a surge in babies called Nancy because of ST so be prepared that it probably won't be as unusual or unique by the time baby flying arrives.

Greycat11 · 16/12/2017 15:24

I like it, I went to school with one although she spelled it Nansi.

user1468353179 · 16/12/2017 15:25

Same here Gemini69

Busybusybust · 16/12/2017 15:26

It was my mother's name. I love it!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 16/12/2017 15:28

We also aren’t finding out gender until birth.

Congratulations! But it's sex. Not gender. Or at least I hope not.

Gender is all about old-fashioned sex-role stereotypes. I haven't watched Stranger Things but Nancy Blackett's a brilliant example of a girl who refuses to accept the constraints of "gender"& just gets on with being herself. I think it's a great name.

daisypond · 16/12/2017 15:29

Hidng - Nancy is a pet form of Anne, even though it's longer. It went something like - "mine Anne" > Nan > Nancy.
I too prefer Nancy to Sienna.

diddl · 16/12/2017 15:29

I'm in my 50s & think of it as old fashioned.

Nancy Mitford, Nancy Cunard, Nancy Astor.

Misspilly88 · 16/12/2017 15:30

LOVE IT!!

Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2017 15:44

My garn was a Nancy at some point I her life, although she was also Annie and Anne, confusingly. I don't think she liked Nancy.

I think it will become fashionable again. Those 30s names are.

In case it puts you off, pretty sure David Cameron has a Nancy. To me it's a bit metropolitan chattering classes these days...

But I did love Nancy Drew!

Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2017 15:44

gran nor garn...

allaboutthatsass · 16/12/2017 15:44

in my part of the country its a derogatory name given to miserable ladies

"Negative Nancy"

Or to someone seen as being gay or wimpy

"Nancy Pansy"

I'd never use that name tbh

DontbeaDickaboutit · 16/12/2017 15:45

It's my name!

Hated it when I was younger but love it now...

waves to the haters Grin

MonumentalAlabaster · 16/12/2017 15:45

Isn't David Cameron's daughter called Nancy?
Also makes me think of Nancy Reagan (showing my age here)

Another consideration is your surname - does it sound OK with that?
For us, all names ending in an "ee" sound like Sophie, Lucy, Emily etc were out because with our surname it sounded too sing-song.

Hastalapasta · 16/12/2017 15:45

Love it! Avoid Sienna. Unless you have a particular fondness for the place?
Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Marcipex · 16/12/2017 15:47

I love it, but hate the phrase Nancy- boy, unfortunately used by jkr. Otherwise I'd hope children today would never have heard it.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 16/12/2017 15:47

I adore Nancy! I always wanted to call my daughter Nancy but our surname doesn't go with it.

It's a beautiful name for you little girl - call her whatever you like, regardless of others.

BringMeTea · 16/12/2017 15:47

Lovely name!

flyingtnx · 16/12/2017 15:48

All names are pretty much a hit with the surname as I have taken on my husbands Eastern European surname. Something about Nancy just seems to have a bit of classiness and originality to it! I’m all for common names but I do like to be a little different!

happypoobum · 16/12/2017 15:50

Oh dear. Where I live it is derogatory term used by homophobic bastards for young gay men so no, I would never use it for a baby girl in this area.

Agree with PP though, I never told anyone what I was planning to call my DC.

eggsandwich · 16/12/2017 15:52

This is why you don’t tell people of your possible name choices, too much input from others.

Insertnameherenana · 16/12/2017 15:53

Nancy is an alternative to Agnes, like Peggy for Margaret.

Mintychoc1 · 16/12/2017 15:56

Since you ask, I think it's a hideous ugly name, and I think Sienna is rather pretentious .

zeeboo · 16/12/2017 15:57

It's gorgeous!! My 7 year old has a good friend at school called Nancy. Smile
