Shortening of Meredith

Bojangles33 · 14/12/2017 21:50

I really like the name Meredith but HATE Merry. Is this just going to cause me rage if I go with it because I'll end up correcting people all the time? Would you automatically shorten it to Merry?

Edith? Edie?

Kit30 · 14/12/2017 21:57

Seems little point in calling DD Meredith if it's never going to be used, especially as you really like it OP. How about Meriel as an alternative?

Ecureuil · 14/12/2017 21:58

My friend Meredith is just Meredith. Never heard anyone shorten it. She’s 34.

southboundagain · 14/12/2017 21:59

It'll definitely get shortened to Merry.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 14/12/2017 21:59

Yes I can see her friends doing this at primary school.

DiegoMadonna · 14/12/2017 22:01

As long as you're not shortening it to Merry then your family probably won't, so what's the problem. Maybe her friends will call her Merry, but I doubt you'll be hanging out with them much anyway.

Also I've only met one Meredith but I never heard anyone call her Merry.

Bojangles33 · 14/12/2017 22:01

Yes my thoughts were that even if we never shorten it at home it will inevitably happen at school and then drive me mad...

I’ve got a Merry Grin

MonaChopsis · 14/12/2017 22:02

Love this name, it's on my wishlist. Agree that Edie is an easy nickname if you don't like Merry.

HelenaJustina · 14/12/2017 22:03

I have a Meredith. We have never shortened it, in the last 6 months her school friends have started calling her Merry. It doesn’t bother me because I rarely have to hear it! Does make me look twice if they do it in the playground though, and it’s certainly not catching on fast.

I love her name, if you don’t shorten it, it’s highly unlikely anyone else will.

Bojangles33 · 14/12/2017 22:03

I really like Edie and Edith so perhaps i could encourage those if people insist on shortening it!

Bellamuerte · 14/12/2017 22:04

I would automatically call her Merry unless she told me not to and suggested a preferred option.

DiegoMadonna · 14/12/2017 22:12

Why would it? My family always use my full name even though I use the common shortening and so does everyone outside my family. I don't think it ever bothered them, since they only really talk about me to each other 99% of the time. On the few occasions they interact with my friends, they don't exactly spend the whole time talking about me and mentioning my name Grin

ButterfliesAreWeird · 14/12/2017 22:15

Depends if it was a boy or a girl?

implantsandaDyson · 14/12/2017 22:17

The one I know occasionally gets Mere, it’s never been shortened to anything else.

FreeNiki · 14/12/2017 22:22

Call her Edith if you really like it .

FreeNiki · 14/12/2017 22:22

I like Mere as a nn. It's cool

Cupcakegirl13 · 14/12/2017 22:25

In Greys Anatomy Meredith is shortened to Mere

EsmeeMerlin · 14/12/2017 22:28

It won't necessarily be shortened at school. My son's name can be shortened to a good few nicknames but whenever anyone has ever shortened it, my son has told them that's not his name and to call him his full name and he is only 4 and corrects school friends so they all call him his full name.

WutheringFrights · 14/12/2017 22:33

I have a Meredith, she has never been anything other than Meredith.

Taylormiffed · 14/12/2017 22:45

My Meredith is also called Merry. Her teachers stick to Meredith but her friends use both versions.

Bue · 14/12/2017 22:50

Both that I know are Mer/Mere when shortened, otherwise the full name is used.

ihavetogoshoppingnow · 14/12/2017 23:10

You don’t have to shorten it. I have a Thomas he’s always been Thomas never tom or tommy. He shouts at people that call him Tom Grin

Snowwwwwwwwwww · 14/12/2017 23:12

Mere or Deth if you watch Grey’s anatomy Grin

OliviaStabler · 14/12/2017 23:12

Mere is what I would shorten that name to
