Shortening of Meredith

I really like the name Meredith but HATE Merry. Is this just going to cause me rage if I go with it because I'll end up correcting people all the time? Would you automatically shorten it to Merry?

The Meredith I know is always Meg.

torthecatlady · 15/12/2017 00:47

I grew up with two girls who went by Mez for short.

pioe · 15/12/2017 00:54

I know a Meroe - said Merraway which is lovely too.

MamaMotherMummy · 15/12/2017 01:52

Go a bit out there and call her Red

laudanum · 15/12/2017 02:33

I've heard Meredith shortened to Mere and also Ditty.

The only one I know is Mer. To rhyme with blur. I think Mare like a horse would be a more common shortening? Thing is though, you don’t get to choose. From the second she’s born the midwives will be shortening it, then playground mums, teachers, other kids. If you really don’t like Merry/i you’ll have to choose another name. Also, she might prefer that.

AlwaysTeaTime · 17/12/2017 15:49

You need to make sure you dont mind Mez- my DD has a similar sounding name and is called Mez by her friends, and her friend Meredith is also mez. Neither of them has ever been called merry

kohl · 17/12/2017 15:55

My Meredith is only merry to her grandfather, Meredith to everyone else, but Little M to me.

rocket74 · 17/12/2017 15:56

My Meredith has never been called Merry - which I don't like either and we would not encourage it. It wouldn't really suit her temperament anyway!!! We call her Dith quite a lot - but mainly Meredith.

iboughtsnowboots · 17/12/2017 15:57

The one I know if female and shortened to Mere.

BrutusMcDogface · 17/12/2017 16:00

Eddie? Grin

I also think of "mere" in grey's anatomy, but think that sounds better in an American accent! I also know a merry.

AlannaOfTrebond · 17/12/2017 16:06

The only Meredith I know was generally referred to as Megadeath.....

TheIntrovertedMum · 17/12/2017 16:20

I've never heard of it being shortened to Merry, I'd be more inclined to shorten t to Edith.
