Anyone seen or heard a name which has a ridiculous spelling? I was served in a shop today by a Georja.

Looked very wrong

Thelonewanderer · 12/12/2017 10:27

I know of a Livviya

AlrightBabby · 12/12/2017 10:29

I taught a child with the BEST name ever...

Anfernee

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/12/2017 10:40

Anfernee.

That trumps the blardy lot. Grin

As a medical secretary, I've come across files belonging to...

Looeze (Louise)
Moregain (Morgan)
Danyell (Daniel)

nospareusernames · 12/12/2017 10:47

I've namechanged as this is very outing,

My name is lynzie.... I've had a lifetime of spelling it out, my dad spelt it how he said it ( not entirely sure exactly how he was saying it to be honest)

I hate hate hate it.

My first name is also Lynsey, there are too many spellings for it and my parents spelt it the way that was fashionable in the year I was born.

Doesn't help that both my maiden and married surname are pretty rare and awkward to spell!

Needless to say both my children have very normal easy to spell names lol

BlueButTrue · 12/12/2017 12:40

The worst spelling of that name has to be 'Linzi' is Shock

Fannyfanakerpants · 12/12/2017 13:28

I also know a Karen, pronounced Kieran in the south east so maybe it's not that strange?

NinaMarieP · 12/12/2017 13:49

Gosh, three Karen/Kierons! It must be a thing after all. Weird thing, but a thing none the less.

MollyHuaCha · 12/12/2017 15:04

I know a Karen who pronounces her name as Care-en. --

And another who says her name is Car-in but her mother just calls her Karen.

PattyPenguin · 12/12/2017 16:57

Voirrey is only Manx for Mary in certain cases, such as if you're addressing Mary. It's that process called mutation again, where the initial letters of words in Celtic languages change for grammatical reasons.

Otherwise it starts with an M, as in other languages.

You get the same thing when people use Mhàiri. It's only Mhàiri (beginning pronounced like the English 'v') in certain cases, as when you're addressing the person, otherwise it's Màiri (beginning pronounced 'm').

Marcipex · 12/12/2017 17:15

I also know a Karen pronounced Care Ann . It must be a variant.

HoratioNightboy · 12/12/2017 17:59

Voirrey is only Manx for Mary in certain cases

OK, thanks for that. I assumed that like Mhàiri it had become a name in its own right now.

Does Morgell/Vorgell follow the same rules as Moirrey/Voirrey then?

ladeladela · 12/12/2017 18:08

NC.

I named DS "Kai"...but wanted him to have a unique spelling name so his name was spelt as "Cie". After a while, I couldn't be arsed anymore as I was getting myself so confused with the spelling and luckily, when it came to register DS birth certificate, I changed it back to "Kai". Grin.

gruber · 12/12/2017 19:08

I would like to put up:
Skhei (Sky)

My next door neighbour’s granddaughter. Didn’t twig until it was on the name list at School doe groups (she’s in my son’s class) and my jaw dropped.

HildaZelda · 13/12/2017 00:25

Some of these are absolutely horrendous. Poor kids! I've come across a Jaxxon and an Abbeygayle. Jackson and Abigail. Oh and a Dineezze. Denise.

Sashkin · 13/12/2017 00:54

Oshun is a Yoruba name. It’s not a mis-spelling of Ocean...

Coconutspongexo · 13/12/2017 05:56

Saskn well she’s not Nigerian and she calls her child Ocean she spelt it Oshun because it’s ‘different’

Coconutspongexo · 13/12/2017 05:57

A lot of so called misspellings are actually Polish etc btw.

PattyPenguin · 13/12/2017 11:31

Horatio I've never heard of Morgell/Vorgell.

Is it supposed to be Manx? I can't find it on any lists of Manx personal names.

Mhairi and Voirrey (and Hamish) are only names in their own right as Anglicised versions of Gaelic and Manx names.

Panicmode1 · 13/12/2017 11:49

I've just had an email from a Kayt. Which I thought was a typo of Katy, but her email address is Kayt, so I assume pronounced Kate?

Whilst I don't think we should have proscribed names lists as they do in some countries, I do think registrars should be allowed to save some parents from themselves!!

eeanne · 13/12/2017 11:58

*I taught a child with the BEST name ever...

Anfernee*

Possibly named for famous US basketball player Anfernee Hardaway Grin

I met a Jordyan once and used to work with a Linzi.

BarbiesPinkShoes23 · 13/12/2017 12:18

I like Linzi, it's my friend's name. I like Jorga too, it's a popular spelling in other countries.
