Anyone seen or heard a name which has a ridiculous spelling? I was served in a shop today by a Georja.

Looked very wrong

Isn’t Leica the name pronounced lee-sha?

eeanne · 15/12/2017 04:15

*I think Americans spell Megan with a H because there is a missguided belief that 1) it is an Irish name and 2) the h makes it look “more Irish”.

Happy to be corrected but this is what Americans I have known have told me.*

American and I've known plenty of Megans/Meghans. The one with "h" is just considered an alternative spelling in the same way as Katherine/Catherine, Sara/Sarah, Rachel/Rachael, etc. Never heard anyone say it's "to seem Irish." Anyway it's a well-accepted spelling of the name, not a particularly unique/trendy one.

sanityisamyth · 15/12/2017 04:56

I’ve heard of a “La-a”, pronounced “Ladasha”

Maggiemoomoo17 · 15/12/2017 05:15

I know someone with a Jorja. Similar to Georja. It's probably going to drive them mad when they're older correcting everyone when they spell it wrong

FFS.

I went to school with a Kaylum and I'm nearly 50 do I don't think that's odd. I also know loads of Debras.

Graiciey-Maye Viktoriya

Simply honestly the worst chosen, worst spelt name I have ever ever come across. Bizarre.

Wtf

Ginnotginger · 17/12/2017 21:10

I worked with a Karen pronounced car ren.

I have a Hollie ( which seems to be getting more popular but still looks wrong to me) and a Maddyleine in my extended family.

I went to school with a Debra and also a Stephen pronounced Stefan.

I had a friend named Tracey, who was fed up with always having to say 'yes with an e' so she changed her name by deed poll to Sianne with a grave accent over the i.

EvilTwins · 19/12/2017 08:15

There’s s girl called Ebbonny at the school I used to teach in.

Shadow666 · 19/12/2017 08:31

Actually, my middle name is spelt wrong. Its Gaelic. Well, there wasnt Google in those days and my parents left it late to register me so I dont bear a grudge. I knew an Evon, who was the result of sending dad to register the name. It was around 60 years ago. Actually, now I think of it, I also knew a Natthen who was also the result of parents who cant spell. Guess it happens a lot.

DameSquashalot · 19/12/2017 08:35

Sometimes it’s the foreign equivalent...

However, I used to work with a L-a (not really) and Rbeca? I suppose it saves time 🤨

DameSquashalot · 19/12/2017 08:43

Just got to ‘Arry 🤣🤣🤣🤣

PattyPenguin · 19/12/2017 13:43

Le-a is not an urban myth. Not any more, anyway.

A friend of my daughter's has been doing supply teaching in secondary schools locally (city) and had one on a class register in the last school year (2016-17).

splendide · 19/12/2017 16:25

Really Patty?

Get her to write to Snopes

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 20/12/2017 07:46

Lol at "Le-a is not an urban myth, my friend's cousin's cleaner's auntie works with one/has one in her class". That's what an urban myth is.

toomuchofacoincidence · 20/12/2017 07:57

Mckayla - just NO

BothersomeCrow · 20/12/2017 08:26

Snopes says that while La-a started off as an urban myth, since then it has been used as a name. Given all the other attempts to be unique, it would be more strange if it hadn't been by now seeing as the urban myth started at least 25 years ago!

I wonder if rigorous phonetics teaching will lead to fewer unphonetic unusual spellings in the future.

pipilangstrumpf · 20/12/2017 08:52

So many names have multiple spellings, often making them more phonetic
Michaela Mikaela Mikayla
Deborah Debora Debra
Catherine Kathryn
Stephen Steven
Louis Louie
Niamh Neeve
Alistair Alasder
Etc

Not saying I like all the versions but names do evolve over time.

A Luchen popped up on my FB feed recently. I assume they meant Lucien.

turquoise88 · 20/12/2017 14:12

Summa. Yes, that's Summer.

wonkylegs · 20/12/2017 14:24

DSs school has a few interesting spellings and although I'm sure some of them are on purpose to make them unique, I know of at least 2 were because the parents got it wrong.
My kids actually stand out in the school as they have traditional 'boring' names with conventional spellings, they are very much in the minority.
However my nephew has a very different name .... well actually he has 5 of them so he more than makes up for my boringness.

Postsynapticdensity · 20/12/2017 17:19
