I know a Russian female Sasha (Alexandra) so perhaps traditionally it's just for males, but it has been used for a female more than once

Very nice, absolute classic. Maybe you could revive Sandra as a shortened form if that's not too old lady? I don't like Alex because I hated school where every other girl was "Alex". None were memorable individually, but that form of the name has a whiff of mouldy PE kit about it IYSWIM.
