I like it and would pronounce it 'leen' if I had to guess. Ottilie is nice too but more popular these days. I've always thought Oli would be a cute nickname for a girl.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 22/11/2017 13:16

Chris Riddel books that dd1 loves!!

sashimiyummies · 22/11/2017 13:28

Prefer Ottolie

CoteDAzur · 22/11/2017 13:36

That is the ugliest name I have ever heard, sorry.

Otto = Male
...line = Female

Is this supposed to be a girl's name?

Icantreachthepretzels · 22/11/2017 13:48

that could be said of other names: Joseph - male ...ine female. So I don't see why Ottoline is any more ridiculous.
It makes me think of the Chris Riddel books as well, but they are fab so that isn't a problem. I have always pronounced it 'line' rather than 'lean'.
I think Ottilie is prettier than Ottoline, but if you prefer Ottoline - go for it.
You'll never please everyone, there are some names that are routinely pronounced 'gorgeous' on here that I think are unbelievably ugly.
But if you read her Ottoline and the yellow cat, then she will absolutely love having that name.

ThisIsReallyFunny · 22/11/2017 13:51

Sorry it sounds like a type of medicine

Allthebestnamesareused · 22/11/2017 13:52

My friend just had a baby Ottilie. I think its lovely.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 22/11/2017 14:01

I do love the Ottoline books Smile

Not the ugliest name I've ever heard, but do agree with the above that it is a bit of a mishmash of masculine/feminine. Not sure how I'd pronounce it tbh!
Ottilie is nicer, I've seen it a lot on baby names threads on MN but don't know of anyone called Ottilie in RL.

What about Odette?

I use to drink in a pub called Lady Ottoline. Even the staff there couldn't decide how it was pronounced. We just called it the Otto Grin

Ottilie is perhaps a bit more mainstream than Ottoline.

TerrysChocolateOrange761 · 22/11/2017 14:25

Never heard of Ottoline before- I would pronouce it as it is spect: Ott-o-line. It's awful, sorry. Sounds like a medical company.

I like Ottilie. However, it might be quite a mouthful for a child to say. It's increasing in popularity.

TerrysChocolateOrange761 · 22/11/2017 14:25

HettyB · 22/11/2017 14:33

We had it on the shortlist for DC2, but I think I’ve gone off it since because no one can seem to agree on how to pronounce it. I’d say it -line, like Caroline, but don’t think I could stand a lifetime of correcting the people who pronounced it the other way (one of my DC’s has a name that is pronounced incorrectly about 20% of the time and even that drives me crackers!)

HettyB · 22/11/2017 14:34

Debby08 · 22/11/2017 14:38

I prefer Ottolie cause it sounds cute and very unique.

pipilangstrumpf · 22/11/2017 14:45

I like Ottoline and also Josephine.

I’d say Otto-leen.

TheLegendOfBeans · 22/11/2017 14:47

I’ve heard it pronounced both ways, I love it but it’s quite a mouthful.

I associate it with Lady Ottoline Morrell, look her up, very interesting character.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 22/11/2017 14:50

I prefer Otilia (Oh til ee a) personally.

mammmamia · 22/11/2017 14:56

My DD loves the books!
Prefer Ottilie as a name though

MammieBear · 22/11/2017 15:18

Rarer than Ottilie and gives that name as a Nn option if you wanted.

Allthecurrentybuns · 22/11/2017 18:45

Love both :) I know a little Odette too :)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/11/2017 19:13

Ottiline, pronounced Ottoleen.
Very nice, not a name I'm familiar with.

Mrsknackered · 22/11/2017 19:13

I don't like Ottoline, but I do like Ottilie.

What about Coraline? It's my favourite -line name

MikeUniformMike · 22/11/2017 21:15

Ottilie and Ottoline are both yuk
