Ok mainly because I don’t want to put this anywhere else...! But I THINK we may have decided on names for baby 2. We have a Rupert nn Roo as our first DS. Won’t find out ace of this one. We have been really struggling woth girls names as have really particular taste and hate most names! But this evening think we have found one! Nicknames are important to us so we have been deliberating a lot as most girl nicknames are yuck imo:

Frederick nn Freddy (not likely ever be Frederick except birth certificate)

Imogen nn Midge (unlike above, only likely to be Midge in conversation and not in writing eg signing birthday cards etc)

Phew. Thought we’d be stuck for a girl name!

Cross posted with a few

You can't call a little
Girl midge it's bloody awful 😂 boys name nice tho.

Daffydil · 11/11/2017 21:37

We have an Imogen. She's Imogen 90% of the time. DH calls her Smidge a lot of the time, because she's small. She's very recently started calling herself Immy. We've never called her that. (She's 20 months).

Imo and Immy seem like very different people to me. Immy is pink and fluffy and likes dolphins and puts hearts over her i's. Imo plays hockey and is probably going to be head girl. And do something sensible. Grin

sooperdooper · 11/11/2017 21:38

The minute she can decide for herself Sod's law says she'll want to be known as Imo or Immy, totally out of your control

Your reasons for midge are irrelevant after she's about 5, she won't be a little girl forever

Standardpubquizname · 11/11/2017 21:40

I think you just have to imagine how you would feel if Imogen decides to use one of the nns that you're not keen on, if you wouldn't be particularly bothered then fine, if it would really bother you then perhaps choose another name.

OrchidShmorchid · 11/11/2017 21:42

We had an idea of what we thought dd2's nickname would be but in reality it's something completely different and unrelated and when i try to use the nickname we originally 'chose' it doesnt feel natural, it feels really forced - despite me calling her by it before she was born. I really think nicknames are organic and develop when a child and personality are born.

UrsulaPandress · 11/11/2017 21:42

I've only known one Midge and she was a Margery.

I don't think you can dictate a nickname. They should evolve.

But your baby. Call it what you like.

ScarletSienna · 11/11/2017 21:43

I like Rupert and Roo seems a likely and natural shortening like William and Will. Imogen isn’t a name I particularly like but I really dislike Immo and Immy. The biggest issue I see is that Midge is not a shortening, it’s a nickname and they usually come about naturally and it feels a bit contrived to give her it.

Also Midge-annoying fly thing and the risk of minge is too great!

MotherOfBoy · 11/11/2017 21:44

Our second runner was Roberta nn Bobbie (to be known as Bobbie) I’m guessing you will all shoot me down for that as well Grin the mn posters back in 2009 seem to be far more forgiving of the nn Midge in fact several suggested it! Dh and I like quite unfeminine names for girls which I think was part of the problem on why we couldn’t decide as hated all the poppy/Eva/Ava/Rosie/Jessica/Isla/mia/Louise etc. Can’t please everyone! Idge or squidge equal possibilities for nn. Bump is squidge atm.

Great boys names.

Imogen is fine.

Midge is fucking awful. It is v similar to Minge and even if that mistakenisnt made then its a bloody annoying mosquito.

If you hate Immy and Imo I wouldn’t use Imogen as chances are that’s what she’ll be known as when she rebels against the family nn she has been saddled with.

bathghter · 11/11/2017 21:47

I just Confused when people pre-conceive nicknames. totally missing the point imo. v uncool.

Mascarawandlady · 11/11/2017 21:50

I thought nicknames would something that came later? My mum hates my name being shortened.

ScarletSienna · 11/11/2017 21:57

I think Bobbie is a known diminutive of Roberta so that doesn’t seem the same to me.

Midge just isn’t flattering.

Standardpubquizname · 11/11/2017 22:02

Roberta nn Bobbie is cool and classic (think railway children) imo, and a much more natural nn than Midge.

Voice0fReason · 11/11/2017 22:02

Imogen is lovely
Midge is awful - even more-so with the reasons you have stated!
Not a huge fan of Roberta and Bobbie is worse.

Your child and her friends will decide on any nickname.
I knew an Imogen called Imms or Immy - I like both

StAlphonzospancakebreakfast · 11/11/2017 22:02

Going against the grain here, I quite like midge, but not keen on Imogen. Midge is a bit like Scout, I can imagine her being quite independent and quirky.
Laughing at Imo playing hockey and being head girl, that's so true 😂

holidayqueriwifi · 11/11/2017 22:07

I had a gorgeous cute nickname lined up for DC.
BUT.... She refuses to use it at all!! Insists on using full name to all. She's right - it's her name!

Standardpubquizname · 11/11/2017 22:07

I think Roberta and Rupert are too similar, which is a shame as its a nice name

alltalknobaby · 11/11/2017 22:08

Midge Ure. Just me?

Courgettekatie · 11/11/2017 22:10

Welll done for deciding all great names/ nick names .

Marcine · 11/11/2017 22:12

Midge is horrible, Immy or Ginny for Imogen surely?
Bobbie is very cute.

Snog · 11/11/2017 22:14

Midge? Horrible biting insect?

stevensupersquirrel · 11/11/2017 22:16

This is a prime example of why you should keep baby name ideas to yourself!

Glittermonster17 · 11/11/2017 22:21

Ignore everyone else - it's your baby. Name he/she what you damn well please ♥️ xxx

Callamia · 11/11/2017 22:27

I went to school with a boy whose nickname was ‘midge’, because he was small.

Bobbie is an ACE name. I wanted to call any girl I had Lenny, most likely short for Elena. I’ve got two boys instead.
