Ok mainly because I don’t want to put this anywhere else...! But I THINK we may have decided on names for baby 2. We have a Rupert nn Roo as our first DS. Won’t find out ace of this one. We have been really struggling woth girls names as have really particular taste and hate most names! But this evening think we have found one! Nicknames are important to us so we have been deliberating a lot as most girl nicknames are yuck imo:

Frederick nn Freddy (not likely ever be Frederick except birth certificate)

Imogen nn Midge (unlike above, only likely to be Midge in conversation and not in writing eg signing birthday cards etc)

Phew. Thought we’d be stuck for a girl name!

Midge is really very bad. I love the name Imogen - it’s classic and understated. Why ruin it with such an ugly and awkward nickname? And I agree with others - choosing a nn before the baby is even here is very contrived.

EvilCleverDog · 11/11/2017 22:35

My niece is an Imogen, we call her mog

Buntysoven · 11/11/2017 22:35

I don't mind Midge at all. It's cute. Adore Roberta though

Lobsterquadrille2 · 11/11/2017 22:39

I know twins called Imogen and Jemima, known as Midge and Mima. Prefer Roberta nn Bobbie though. Also agree with PPs that you as parents don't get to choose nicknames - I have a nearly 20 year old Miranda who calls herself Mandy (which I loathe!)

pickleface · 11/11/2017 22:40

I like midge Grin and iggy too.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2017 22:40

Once she starts school your “control” over the nn will diminish.

The only problem I have with Midge is that it sounds, i Don’t know, small, apologetic, timid. I’m not sure I’d want a daughter of mine to have such a meek sort of name

AnyaMoondial · 11/11/2017 23:07

Midge is a cool nn.

mistermagpie · 11/11/2017 23:15

Imogen is a nice name but I agree with others that contriving the nn ‘Midge’ before the child is born is a bit odd and sort of misses the point of nicknames. Roberta/Bobby is different because that is a proper shortening of the name. If you don’t like girly names then Stevie is my ultimate girls name, might be worth considering?

FWIW regarding ‘Immy’ etc, I have a DS called Magnus, loads of people said he would get called ‘Maggie’ and it nearly put me off. As it happens he has never been called that ever, not by us or anyone else!

ilovepixie · 11/11/2017 23:33

I like midge.

SuperBeagle · 12/11/2017 00:01

Midge is horrid.

Imogen is lovely.

Rupert and Roberta are too similar.

Tipsytopsyturvy · 12/11/2017 00:04

What would happen if d.... girl was average height

Mclaren37 · 12/11/2017 03:47

Love Imogen! Congrats. (Much prefer Immy or Immo to Midge but that's just me). Lovely names.

Hazandduck · 12/11/2017 04:13

I agree with others that I thought nicknames tend to come about naturally over time. My niece Florence got called the usual Flo/Florrie but somehow got called Clorriebobbins (nephew was about 2 and struggled with Fs) then Flodger, which evolved to Dodger so by the time she could talk she told everyone her name was Roger and wouldn’t answer to anything else! It was all part of the fun though seeing these little people develop with their name/nicknames :)

stevensupersquirrel · 12/11/2017 05:52

If you are open to suggestions, how about Henrietta nn Hennie?
(Similar feel to Roberta/ Bobbie, without getting the Rupert and Roberta kids tv show vibe).

deptfordgirl · 12/11/2017 06:54

Frederick and Imogen are both lovely, great choices!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 12/11/2017 07:11

Well the adult Imogen I know is known as Smidge, so I don’t find Midge too odd at all.

I can’t stand the name Imogen, but if you want to use it I can see how you’ve come up with Midge as the nn you’ll use.

I wouldn’t choose a name where you hate the most common shortenings though. She will be called Immy or Imo by friends & may well use one or the other herself. You are going to hear the nn you hate really often!

capercaillie · 12/11/2017 07:13

I love midge!

NerrSnerr · 12/11/2017 10:26

I like Imogen (but there are a lot around my area) but I would wait for the nickname to evolve. I have many friends who would be embarrassed by having an ironic nickname (like you said if they were tall). By school age I can imagine she’ll end up Immy anyway.

ChequeredPasta · 12/11/2017 10:27

Too close to minge I think.
Sorry

mintich · 12/11/2017 10:30

I knew an Imogen called Midge, she was one of those super cool girls!

TatianaLarina · 12/11/2017 11:34

Love Imogen hate Midge. The Imogen I know is called MiMi (mee mee)

But yes, her friends will define what she’s called.

pipilangstrumpf · 12/11/2017 11:56

Roberta is much nicer than Imogen.

And I agree, Midge is awful, sounds like midget.

MimiDeLaSun · 12/11/2017 12:21

Roberta is better.

I’m a secondary teacher and I can guarantee no teenage girl would choose to be called Minge sorry Midge.

TatianaLarina · 12/11/2017 13:35

Roberta’s ghastly. Slightly pompous.
