What do we think of Luna?
I really like it but I guess I'm worried that it will be seen as tacky in a few years. Is it like Skye, Scarlet etc or do you think it's more timeless and solid like Iris?
Honest opinions please!

I've known too many dogs with that name so can't imagine it on a human I'm afraid.

The dog owners would joke that it's short for lunatic.

Plus it's Spanish for Moon...which you might want to think about.

HenryBiggleswade · 03/11/2017 20:33

I really like it and have considered it for our own dd but don’t think it’s timeless, although I also wouldn’t call it a ‘fad’ name!

FluffyMcCloud · 03/11/2017 20:33

I think it is quite "now" - super popular with under 5s where I live, I know loads! So I think it will be associated with a certain time, yes.

icantgetnosleep5 · 03/11/2017 20:34

i like Luna :)

BamburyFuriou3 · 03/11/2017 20:37

Loony Luna will be just too easy.

HollowCity · 03/11/2017 20:38

I like it

Ladyrebecc · 03/11/2017 20:40

The dog and looney issues don't bother me. I just don't want to choose a fad name that will be seen as tacky in a few years!

I think it's a bit tacky and will definitely date. Maybe use it as a middle name?

HarryPottersBroomstick · 03/11/2017 20:50

I like it! I have a friend whose baby is a Luna. They are a little bit alternative and I have a feeling it will suit this child. It's a little hippy but not overly so.

Most names are of their time aren't they? Maybe not the really traditional ones especially for boys.

loveisevol · 03/11/2017 20:52

Lovegood. Sorry!

dementedma · 03/11/2017 20:56

Popular now. Goes with Noah and Oscar

rowtheboats · 03/11/2017 21:16

I can’t get away from ‘Luna-tic’

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/11/2017 21:47

I think its gorgeous, but like Rowtheboats I can't get past "tic"

HaHaHmm · 03/11/2017 21:56

It is very 2010s and it will absolutely date as such. If you look here you'll see that it was almost unheard of before 2010 and leapt 52 places into the top 100 in 2016. I don't think you can read that data as anything but a fad name. Sorry.

stopbeingadramallama · 03/11/2017 22:00

Hideous

Waterfeature · 03/11/2017 22:29

Very faddy, sorry.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 04/11/2017 05:01

OP,
A few alternatives to Luna, all associated with the moon.

Amaris - Old Irish meaning: "Child Of The Moon" (you'll need to ask an Irish MNer re pronunciation!)

Ayla - Turkish meaning: "Halo Of Moonlight" (Turkish pron: EYE-lah)

Elara - One of the Moons of Jupiter
Larissa - One of the Moons of Neptune
Rhea - One of the Moons of Saturn
(Obviously from mythology, so other actual meanings...but have moon connections in astronomy and so included here!)

Selene is the Greek mythological moon Goddess, so equivalent to Luna (Roman).
(Greek pron: Seh-LEE-nee...though I've also heard Seh-LEEN/ Seh-LEN in modern use).
Selene races her Moon Chariot across the heavens, illuminated by her crown, which sounds really feisty as well as poetic. Smile
Plus, her daughter Eos is Goddess of the Dawn.

Or, these have a similar sound/vibe to Luna:
Nova?
Lana?
Juno?
Thea?

Themummy76 · 04/11/2017 06:05

No - it is faddy

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 04/11/2017 06:10

I love it!
There's an Isabelle Allende book called Eva Luna - it's a beautiful Spanish name OP Smile

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 04/11/2017 06:13

Alba is really cute too - meaning sunrise.

Also loving Paloma. - a dove / symbol of peace.

Smile
AJPTaylor · 04/11/2017 06:13

the dog and looney issues dont bother me.
but will they bother your child is the issue?
its a very now name if thats what you want.

CluelessMummy · 04/11/2017 06:34

I think it's a bit faddy, sorry. I love the suggestions above though.

Bluntness100 · 04/11/2017 06:38

No, Harry Potter will be popular for a long time yet and a whole generation still needs to grow up who will associate the name with it, loony Luna, don’t do it to your kid.

flumpybear · 04/11/2017 06:45

No it’s a bit chavvy and faddy

speakout · 04/11/2017 06:58

I think it is very easy to assume you have found a quirky name, only to find several years down the line there are several in the same class wit that name.
It's a Zeitgeist thing.
So yes you are right like the Scarlet thing.
