Calliope

Do you think people would get used to the pronounciation? Penelope is accepted and most people seem to have the hang of Hermione.

I think so, it’s not a difficult one and there was a Greys Anatomy character called Calliope so some people will already be familiar with it.
Pretty name.

tissuesosoft · 17/10/2017 09:47

Love it! It's on my list if we decide to have another DC, I also love the shortening of Callie

NannyR · 17/10/2017 09:49

It's a very pretty name. I love Callie too.

Chatoyant · 17/10/2017 09:53

I know the pronounciation because of Greys Anatomy. She's a great character so don't let that put you off. I think it's really pretty.

Coconutspongexo · 17/10/2017 09:54

Callie/Calliope was one of my favourite characters on Greys.
Very strong name.

PhuntSox · 17/10/2017 09:56

An encouraging initial response, thank you! I also think its a strong name.

I know how to pronounce it, but I really, really don't like it.

ChocolateCrunch · 17/10/2017 11:55

I think it's a beautiful name, as well as Cally/Callie.

PestoSwimissimos · 17/10/2017 12:00

How is it pronounced?

Csd17 · 17/10/2017 12:02

Love Callie from Grey’s. Calliope is a beautiful name. I’m sure people will get the pronunciation and if they aren’t sure, you can always just prompt them

Csd17 · 17/10/2017 12:02

Cal i o pee

GeillisTheWitch · 17/10/2017 12:04

I think its pronounced Cal-eye-oh-pee. I like the sound of it but the child would be doomed to a lifetime of having to spell it out for people.

PestoSwimissimos · 17/10/2017 12:07

So it rhymes with ‘Can I go pee?’ Shock

I wouldn’t

CSLewis · 17/10/2017 12:07

I'm 'good' with words, decoding pronunciations generally, but I had no idea how to pronounce that just from reading it. I think the double 'll' suggests a a soft 'i' sound after (as in Callista), rather than the hard 'eye' sound - but it sounds like that's not how it should be pronounced..?

Maybe you could say to people "...it's pronounced like 'Hermione'..." upon first introduction (if that is indeed how it's pronounced... I'm still slightly confused! Is the accent on the 'i'?

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 17/10/2017 12:08

I’m reading it as rhyming with karaoke. Is that right?

CSLewis · 17/10/2017 12:08

I forgot to close my bracket Confused

Veterinari · 17/10/2017 12:11

Lovely name OP and no more tricky to pronounce than many other names - and much easier than some!

n0ne · 17/10/2017 12:12

Huh, I always assumed it was pronounced Cally-oh-pee, emphasis on the 'oh'. I love this name and it's origin, but fear it will be mispronounced.

Coconutspongexo · 17/10/2017 12:14

If people can pronounce Niamh they can pronounce Calliope and if not they can learn to!

Only1scoop · 17/10/2017 12:31

Sounds like a Greek beach resort

verystressedmum · 17/10/2017 12:43

If it’s pronounced Cal-eye-oh-pee it sounds like you’re saying the alphabet Confused
It’s a bit strange, but if you name your dd that then people will get used to it.

Lifeofpies · 17/10/2017 12:49

Loved this name since hearing it on Grey’s (despite annoying character), and I think people would cope with it!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 17/10/2017 16:51

Nice, OP.

As is "Callie" for a shortening.

And my friend Penelope is still occasionally (for real, not for a lame joke!) asked if Penny-lope is the correct pronunciation, and that's a name far more commonly used.
I'm sure Hermiones get mistaken Her-my-own/ Her-me-own from time to time, too.

People will quickly learn, I wouldn't worry!

NinonDeLenclos · 17/10/2017 17:04

I sort of like it but it does sound a bit like 'calliper'.

Olivelor · 17/10/2017 17:05

Calliope is such a lovely name. Very uncommon and I'm sure people would get used to it in no time.Star
