I give you Pauline. That's a name that should die. She got ripped off amongst her many sisters.

My mum was called Pauline and died suddenly recently. If I was having a girl I'd be using it as a middlename. I'm having a boy so Paul will be his middlename.

Apparently the "ine" sound on the end of names is considered classy in France.

Butterymuffin · 11/10/2017 09:37

David Mitchell and Victoria Coren Mitchell named their daughter Barbara.

My mum was Ruth and I really wish I had used it for dd. My grandma was Sarah and my middle name is Sarah so I gave dd Sarah as a mn too.

I actually love the name Sheila. I don't have English relatives, though, so don't directly associate it with older people. I love Susan, too. And Rita.

My 5 year old DS is named John. Not named after anyone, just because I love it. Desperately wanted to name DD Veronica, but ExH wouldn't have it.

My DH's Grandmother and Mother totally and utterly assumed that any daughter of mine would be called by the Grandmother's name (not awful, pretty unusual today but quite classic), as that is what my Sil would have done had she had a daughter (she didn't, 2 boys). I was given no say in the matter! Needless to say I smiled sweetly, and announced my daughter's unusual name with a big smile on my face and full support from my DH. The look on their faces.....priceless!

Well, I'm a bit old to be choosing names now ( next baby in our family will be the child of either my dcs or dniece/nephews) but no, I didn't choose either my dm name or MIL name if we'd had girls. But, neither did we choose names from my grandparent's generation, which are the names that are popular now - George, Harry etc. Based on the names I see on children at the school where I work, I feel that there's a definite cycle and suspect that possibly children born now may be given names that were more popular in my mum's generation. Some are already creeping in - Ava, May,/Mae, Rose, Betty.

Great thread! My mum is called Janet, which she herself dislikes, and I would never use. I have certainly never met a child called Janet, and would be extremely surprised if I did!

KERALA1 · 11/10/2017 20:26

Our kids will use these names for our grandchildren and we will hate it!

My friends grandmothers last words were "why the hell did you call her Elsie"

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 12/10/2017 11:56

DD has my late mum's name as a middle name. I considered it as a first name but it doesn't go well with our surname , so we discounted it. It still sounds odd as a middle name if you say all three names together, but that almost never happens.

IAmTheDragon · 14/10/2017 16:08

My gran is Florence, which is gorgeous and trendy now.

My mum's is way too 60s for me to use.

ziggzagg · 14/10/2017 16:27

My mums name is Ruby so it's really popular now anyway....

Pottytoes · 14/10/2017 16:33

My mum is Margaret Elsie. I'm sure Elsie was for a relative. It's funny that Elsie is fashionable now as my mum hates it.
I would possible use Margaret as a mn.
I'd also use my dad's name Paul as a middle name

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/10/2017 16:35

My mum is Margaret, mainly called Peggy. I really like Peggy, I hope it makes a comeback.

Had we had a dd instead of dses we would have used Victoria as a middle name; my grandmother was Victoria and mil had Victoria as her middle name so it covered both sides of the family.

Mrsknackered · 14/10/2017 19:28

@throughthickandthin01 I know a couple of little Peggy's!
I think James Nesbitt has a daughter called Peggy too.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/10/2017 19:43

That's nice to know Mrs !

RuthW · 15/10/2017 00:11

Definitely. (My mum is Brenda) but too late for me. Hoping any grandchildren have these sort of names.

I chose an old fashioned name for my dd 20 years ago which was rare, but unfortunately its now now in the top 20. It wasn’t in the top 100 when I chose it

TheProdigalRhubarb · 15/10/2017 09:21

Dd’s middle name is Denise. I love it. I also love Marjorie.

BlackPepperCrab · 15/10/2017 09:28

I love something like Teresa or Carol. Names like Gretchen/Brenda won't work for me though.

LandofTute · 15/10/2017 11:39

I like Marjorie too Prodigal.
I don't put Teresa in the same bracket at the others in the thread title. I think of it as a classic catholic name rather than specific to my parents' era

vickibee · 15/10/2017 11:58

My mum is called Phyllis I don't think that will ever be popular again. My mums sister was called Elsie and that seems to be in vogue.

laelti · 15/10/2017 22:08

My mum is Jacqueline... not awful but very dated but I can't imagine a baby one! We're expecting a boy though, so Jack is a definite middle name contender.
My dad is Kevin and I definitely can't imagine that coming back anytime soon!

susurration · 16/10/2017 16:11

There are names on the 40's and 50's lists that I would use, but I would never use my mum's name. She doesn't like it and I don't like it. She doesn't have a middle name either so if I had to commemorate her with a name for my future child we'd be screwed.

I do really like names like Norma, Betty and Irene. I really like Martha. Husband would be having none of it though.
