I have a Mollie Jean and love the name. She's named after her great Grandma

ecuse · 08/10/2017 19:35

I wasn't planning to, but then DD2 was born on my mum's bd, so it seemed meant to be. She has my (1950s born) DM's name, which is my middle name, it's Elizabeth though, so fairly timeless. But DM goes by Liz and my DD goes by Beth.

Crowely · 08/10/2017 19:54

Both my DD's first and middle names are on the 1940s list Grin Dd1 middle name is my grandmothers name and dd2 middle name is both my mother's name and Dr's grandmothers name.

I know a young Daphne and a Reenie. I wouldn't use either of my Mum or MILs first names. Mum's name is always misheard and she hates it. MIL is one of the names mentioned above. My nanny's name is Emma. I wouldn't use it because there are so many in our family but I do think it is very 'usable' for next generation.

Personally I dislike traditional gp names. They are really fashionable in my area, but I'm not a fan. I also strongly dislike royal names - Williams, George's etc. because it seems like almost every other boy locally has one of them.

Yes, DD is named after my Mum (first name, with an 'a' added on the end, to make it her own, a bit - my Mum died before I got together with DH), and DH's Mum (middle name).

I am named similarly - my first name is after my Dad's Mum (who died when he was a teenager), and my middle name after my Mum's Mum.

My name was so completely out of fashion when I was given it in the early 70s. My parents worried it was a real mistake, and figured I could always use my middle name, if I really hated it.

I didn't like it all that much when I was growing up, but I love it now. And enough time has now elapsed, that it (and its variations) are one of the most popular girls' names. I like having a 'fresh' sounding name as an adult.

I also love being named after my grandmothers that I never met. I find it incredibly special - gutted that I never got to meet those women, and this is such a special way to be connected to them.

My mother was called Susan and hated her name. I found out I was pregnant with my daughter on the day of her funeral.
I wanted to call my daughter after her, but after a lot of deliberation, decided on a more modern name that started with similar letters and my OH Grandmother's name, so we had ourselves a very beautiful
(imo) Summer Rose.

My daughter has both my mother and my mother in law's names as middle names. All my children have old fashioned names, I love them!!

My newborn daughter has my mums name as a middle name. My mum passed away 6 weeks before I found out I was pregnant. Not a name I would use as a first name, but love it as a middle name. Very 50's name! My DS also has my dads name as his middle name. Would never use the in laws names though, bad enough that they share the same surname as my DC!

LJdorothy · 08/10/2017 23:20

I gave my daughter the same name as my mum. They're both Sally, as was my mum's grandmother and great-grandmother. My daughter likes her name, so all's fine!

Mum2OneTeen · 08/10/2017 23:37

God no! My mother's name is Lorna, it suits her and is 'her' name, her grand kids deserve to have their own names. Use your mother's (or father's) name as a middle name if you absolutely have to.

It can be a big burden to be saddled with the same name as a close relative.

LostPlatypus · 08/10/2017 23:54

My mum is called Veronica. I don't mind the name but I would never use it simply because SHE hates it!

BearFoxBear · 09/10/2017 00:07

My name is on this list and I'm only 40 and have a toddler!

mathanxiety · 09/10/2017 07:31

I did.

Luckily, mum has a pretty exotic name, quite unusual.

My mum was horrified. She didn't have the same reaction at all when DS got dad's name. Was pleased actually...

I know a Shauna Marie Lorraine whose name incorporates both her grandfathers' and grandmothers' names.

I love Rita, Teresa and Joan. Two of those names are dear cousins of my mum's, lovely ladies. I considered Joan for DS.

I also love Tess, as an alternative to Teresa.

MachineBee · 09/10/2017 08:06

My DSis is Joanne and we always call her Jo. I wanted to use that name for my DD2 but as my DSis had always had weight problems we didn't because I could see my DD being 'little Jo' and DSis being 'big Jo'. We used it for her middle name instead!

Choccyhobnob · 09/10/2017 12:42

My mum is a 1960's Mandy. Not short for anything and I just couldn't use it even as a middle name!

Tigertots · 09/10/2017 14:28

Come to think of it, why can't every name be "evergreen"? Just a point of interest: why don't you get a good mixture of all names, in every generation?

UsernameInvalid66 · 09/10/2017 15:48

My mum's name is Elizabeth (she's older than any of those stats though!) and I like it very much. If I had a daughter I might well have used it as a middle name. I think it is pretty timeless though and some of the names of people she knew of about the same age, like Wendy and Shirley, would be a lot more difficult for a modern young woman to live with.

BackforGood · 09/10/2017 16:08

Generally your own Mum's name will sound 'old fashioned' to people giving birth now, or at whatever decade they gave birth. However, in time, all names come round again. I am in my 50s now, and the vast majority of names being given to babies in last 10 years of so sound really old fashioned to me, because I'm an older generation than those giving birth now..
When my Mum told her Mum what she wanted to call me, my Grandmother was horrified as she thought it very old fashioned, but my name is really common in my generation.

So it goes on - it is cyclical.

NearLifeExperience · 09/10/2017 19:45

My mum is Helena, which is OK, not sure if I'd use it. Her middle name though, is Theodora which she hates... I rather like it!

MIL - Margaret Theresa - meh

GM's - Violet and Catherine. Wanted Violet for our youngest DD but no one else liked it!

SuburbanRhonda · 09/10/2017 19:54

My mum gave me her own name. So we have exactly the same name (I didn't change my surname when I got married).

I love the name but I still think it's a weird thing to do.

LovelyBranches · 10/10/2017 23:34

DS goes to nursery with a Marjorie.

My DM is Marilyn and I haven't heard that back yet, but some of her siblings names are. I saw a thread the other day considering the name Dennis Rex

ReggaetonLente · 10/10/2017 23:42

I like Pamela, Jacqueline and Karen. Would use any of those.

I also like Diana.

My mum's name is Elizabeth, which I think is classic and timeless.

Livness12 · 11/10/2017 01:52

My lovely mum was a Susan (always Susan, never Sue).

She died when I was 22 so will never get to meet any children I have (hypothetically currently!) But if I have a daughter one day I would love to use the name Susannah. So not quite naming after, and not the 'classic' name in this sense, but I like the idea. I like the fact that Susan is a part of Susannah but not its whole (if that makes sense), just as my mum will always be a part of any children I have, despite never meeting them (in the sense that the way she and my dad brought me up will in turn be a part of my children through the influence on how I will choose to bring them up).

I may have thought this through too much.

Sorry Mom but I don't think Sharon is ever coming back...
