I love the names Joan, Wendy, Sarah, Caroline, Jilly and Rita.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 06/10/2017 11:53

Im in my 20s and my name is Theresa, love my name now as.an adult.

My mum is a Jennifer, which is an alright name and was not too common in the 40s but my generation had Jennifers coming out the wazoo. If I had a DD she wouldn't be a Jennifer. But my grandmother was known as Joan and I think it's beautiful. One of my cousins just had a girl and named her after my DGM's SIL (her DGM) who was Lillian. I love both names. DH vetoed Joan so it's a goid thing our DD is only ever going to be hypothetical or he'd have a fight on his hands.

My mum's name is Diane, she hates it, it's not one of my favourites either. I like DH's mum's name but he doesn't have a relationship with her so would never have wanted to use it! We had always planned to use DH's grandmother's name (Klara) if we had a girl, either as a first or middle name.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 06/10/2017 12:07

My mother was a Hilda (1930s) my husband's mother a Winifred (1920s). We did briefly consider naming DD Winifred Hilda just to see how people would react Grin. But no, it's not something we could have brought ourselves to actually do.

When I was having DD, the lady in the bed opposite mine wanted to name her DD after her mother. The name was a bit old-fashioned (I'm not going to quote it here, so I'll go with "Vanessa"). The problem was that she had no idea how to spell Vanessa. I heard her talking to the midwife, "I want to call her after my mum. V-E-R-N...er, no, V-E-A-R..."

I've heard of children with my late Mum's name. It raises a smile, particularly if they're a little precocious, as I believe she was.

My own name was on the 1940's list - was my grandmothers - always hated it - still do. Cant understand why my other didnt pretty it - all that had to be added was "anna" to make it socially acceptable! being called at the Drs etc people expected to see a middle aged battle axe ...

Some of my friends have edited their mothers/MILs names - for their children so Maggie, Peggy, etc which I think is lovely.

Love Josie and Rita.

Doesnt seem to be loads of difference from the 1940s and 1950s lists...all kicks off in the 1960's...

Others from the lists that I find "challenging" (could n't stomach) :
1940's & 1950's:
Eileen, Glenda, Marjorie, Mildred, Irene, Jean, Gwendoline, Wilma, Bertha, Ida, Valerie, Veronica, Monica, Yolanda,

1960's:
Cynthia, Jacqueline, Paula, Tracey, Sharon, Karen, Stacey, Gail, Yvonne, Cheryl, Belinda, Sonia, Mandy

My mum is Marisa, I would definitely use it - but my dad wanted to name me after her and she wasn't happy at all, so I'm not sure how she would feel about having a grandchild with her name, I think I'd have to ask first.

DD's middle name is (very high!) on those lists, after DH's late mother. I would've been happy to use it as a first name but I think it was up to DH to suggest it (and he didn't).

another20 · 06/10/2017 12:16

LinaBo - Tell us DD middle name - PLEASE -- it can't be outing

I used to like my DM's name for a daughter but it's become incredibly popular in the last 10 years and it's really put me off.
We had a DS anyway so pretty irrelevant in the end.

another20 · 06/10/2017 12:21

Also I loved when the little girl on "Out Numbered" was called Karen -- seem so unlikely for someone born in the 2000's - but it sounded v sweet and unpretentious every time I heard it.

Nope! My mum is a Pamela.

I’d middle name it yes but never a first name.

evilharpy · 06/10/2017 12:24

My mum (late 1930s) is a Deirdre. She has always loved her name. I couldn't bring myself to use it even as a middle name.

DownstairsMixUp · 06/10/2017 12:27

My mum is a Teresa, born in 60’s, I quite like the name.

BoredOnMatLeave · 06/10/2017 12:28

My mums name is Nicola which we've used as DD middle name. My DM hates her name so wouldn't have been happy with it as her first name.

I have my Nan's middle name too

another20 · 06/10/2017 12:28

Tessa short for Teresa is cool?

I have a Theresa Margaret who we mostly call Tessie. Margaret was both of my grandmothers' first names and my DM's middle name, so it has strong family connections for me. We just liked Tess.

pallisers · 06/10/2017 12:33

My mum was born in the 30s. Both her full name and her shortened version (another name in itself) would be considered fine now - shortened version is very cool actually. We gave dd her name as a middle name.

My grandmother's name is very trendy now.

another20 · 06/10/2017 12:37

LBO - Prime Ministers names ! Tessie lovely.

Pallisers -- would love to hear them.

another20 it's Patricia Grin - I know it's not popular on MN but I like it.

LBOCS2 · 06/10/2017 12:40

I know! It was completely accidental - and I think that if DH had realised he would definitely have exercised his right to veto Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/10/2017 12:46

DS is named after my grandfather for his first name and my DH's grandfather for his middle name. I absolutely would use my mum's name (Linda) if I had a baby girl, maybe as a middle name because my mum is still alive and it seems wrong to name a baby after a living relative - i know I may be alone in this view, but both grandfathers had passed away before DS was born.

EssentialHummus · 06/10/2017 13:06

It’s a thing in judaism too.

Notbread · 06/10/2017 13:12

My mother's name is Carol and some of my friends had given their daughter's their mother's name as a middle name, Christine and Diane. I was given strict instructions by my mother not to name any child after her as it was cruel.

FartnissEverbeans · 06/10/2017 13:17

My mum's name is Agnes. She hates it but I've known two lovely teenagers who made it seem really chic.

I also know a little anybody Rita! I love it - it makes me think of the golden age of Hollywood. Rita Hayworth maybe?

I also think Theresa is a beautiful name, with the option of Tess/Tessa which are great nicknames.

I think Joan is sounding quite cool now, as is Jean.

I once read somewhere that, to predict what the next wave of baby names will be, you should look at what gay men are naming their dogs Confused
