*baby Rita, not anybody Rita!

My mother was called Iris. It's lovely to see it making a comeback!

another20 · 06/10/2017 13:21

Patricia - my friend named her daughter after her Mother and she is known as Patti (both of which are lovely).

Theresa will be associated with T. May for a while yet. Interesting how some of these names like Rita (via Rita Ora?) have made a totally unexpected comeback.

No, I wouldn’t name my daughter after my mum. Mainly because I know she’s always disliked her name, and would be horrified rather than honoured!

Incidentally, here were the top 10 girls names in England & Wales for 1944, 1954, and 1964, according to the British Baby Names website (I couldn’t find info for the full decade)

1944: Margaret, Patricia, Christine, Mary, Jean, Ann, Susan, Janet, Maureen, Barbara

1954: Susan, Linda, Christine, Margaret, Janet, Patricia, Carol, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne

1964: Susan, Julie, Karen, Jacqueline, Deborah, Tracey, Jane, Helen, Diane, Sharon

My favourites out of those are Elizabeth, Anne, Deborah, Jane, Helen, Jean, Susan, and Margaret. I also quite like Beverley, Marjorie, and Veronica from the names mentioned above.

SurfingKitten · 06/10/2017 15:07

I can't see Beryl making a comeback for a while hopefully ever either.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/10/2017 15:11

I like Jacqueline from abc list. I think it's really pretty.

MadisonAvenue · 06/10/2017 15:13

My mom is called Ivy, she's never liked her name but I do so wouldn't hesitate to name a daughter after her.

harrietm87 · 06/10/2017 15:14

My mum is called Jane and I think it's a lovely name for a little girl, would definitely consider it for my daughter. I've noticed that Jean and Joan are both making a comeback - wonder whether Jane will do the same?

JemimaLovesHamble · 06/10/2017 15:15

All the Cath Kidston type cutesy retro names - Ivy, Mabel, Ava, Ruby, etc - were greeted with horror by the seniors group I volunteer at when they first started becoming popular. They liked the "modern" names - Carol, Christine, Tracey.

It will definitely circle around at some point when people are far enough away from the likes of Viz and Carry On, and Sharon will start to look exotic/classy again "Oh, like the fruit! And dear old Nanna!"

another20 · 06/10/2017 15:26

Thanks ABC - I only picked what I thought to be "challenging" from the US list - many of the ones on your list were on but I thought OK.

However surprised by the subsequent support for Jean and Joan on this thread -- but has anyone actually called their daughter either?

I love the name Shirley and have it earmarked to use in the future. Possibly paired with Maeve as a middle name.

I also love the name Fanny, which was in the family, but obviously has less positive connotations now. Even Aunt Fanny has become a Franny in new editions of Famous Five books. Would have it as short for Frances probably but think it's likely to be vetoed by the other half.

JemimaLovesHamble · 06/10/2017 15:51

I like Doris and Brenda. Brenda gives me the association of rain on an umbrella, and Doris is like clean laundry in spring. I don't know about kids, but if I ever have guinea pigs...

greendale17 · 06/10/2017 15:53

No no and no

EssentialHummus · 06/10/2017 15:58

Sharon will start to look exotic/classy again "Oh, like the fruit!

GrinGrin I cannot see this happening, but let's see...

manicinsomniac · 06/10/2017 17:21

My mum's a 1950s Susan and hates it. She calls herself Sue. Whereas I rather like Susan and really don't like Sue.

I don't think I could name a child Susan but I could easily live with Susannah.

I actually think most of that generation of names are lovely when taken just as names. It's all the associations of middle age and overuse in those decades that make them seem unusable.

I'd far rather see a resurgence of Susans, Pamelas, Belindas (love this) and Jacquelines than Kellys, Kerrys and Kylies.

But I think the worst of a generation's names (though I appreciate this is subjective) will never really return. I mean, we now have an abundance of Esmes, Elsies, Rubys and Lilys but you rarely (ever?) hear of a little Dorcas, Ethel or Bertha. All 7 names are from the same generation but the first 4 (imo) were much prettier to start with so more likely to come back.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/10/2017 17:50

Yes, I would definitely have used my mum's name but she's called Lenore and I think it's beautiful.

My nana (maternal grandmother) was a Pamela. I would probably use it I think, better than Bertha which was one of my great aunt's names...

harrietm87 · 06/10/2017 17:52

I know a very well to do family where the wife is called Sharon but pronounces it Share-on - it's straight out of Hyacinth Bucket!

EKLInTraining · 06/10/2017 18:08

My mother is Marie-Hélène & grandmother is Marie-Adrienne. I don't mind either but wouldn't use them for a DD. I'd consider Marie as a middle name though.

Soubriquet · 06/10/2017 18:15

My mum is Samantha

Which I do like but I hate Sam/Sammy.

So no, I wouldn't use it

Soci · 06/10/2017 18:22

I'm extremely unimaginative with names so if I had lots of kids, I would probably end up using all the relatives names. So far only have one DS and named him after my grandfather and greatgrandfather.... Had we had a girl, she would have been named after my grandmother and greatgrandmother.....

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2017 18:23

Elizabeth. I wouldn't, but I definitely could. I might be more likely to use my grandmothers' names: Winifred (aka Betty) and Cicely (aka Nancy).

Glumglowworm · 06/10/2017 18:57

My mother is Rosemary known as Rose

I wouldn't personally except maybe a middle name, but it wouldn't stand out among her peers

Glumglowworm · 06/10/2017 18:59

My grandmother is Irene which I think is due a comeback Reenie is a cute nn
