Annie or Nancy

Can't decide between them. DD1 is called Martha. Possible middle names at the moment are Patricia or Elizabeth (family names). Any thoughts?

Hmmmm a real split of opinions so far! Our surname begins with S and is one syllable but I'm not sure that helps to narrow it down either! I love both names but the very slight niggles I have for each are:

Annie - Does it feel too much like a shortened name? Would an adult with a serious job sound right with a name like Annie?

Nancy - Is it a bit too girly/frilly sounding? (I'm not a girly girl and DD1 is definitely a bit a a tomboy)

Interesting to hear what people think. Thanks Smile

I don't think Nancy sounds frilly at all. I always envisage a tomboy. Or a strong woman who knows her own mind. Can't quite remember her character now but I might have got that mental image from Nancy in Swallows and Amazons.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/09/2017 14:06

Yes, I think Annie does sound like a shortening, but it doesn't matter.
Martha and Nancy sound great together.

GiantSteps · 30/09/2017 15:01

If you'd read Swallows and Amazons you would never say that Nancy is a frilly name.

Annie is a nickname or a shortening, as is Nancy. Both familiar (as in family) versions of Anne.

Annie is a diminutive. OK for a child, but not a very serious name.

Why not give your daughter options? Call her Anne officially, and then use a familiar name. She can then choose when she's older.

MikeUniformMike · 30/09/2017 15:06

I like both but it would depend on the personality. I would choose Annie.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 30/09/2017 15:11

I like both of them.

Yes Annie is a perfectly acceptable grown up name.

Nancy isn't girly at all, the only Nancy I know was a complete tomboy.

Nancy91 · 30/09/2017 15:16

I'm biased, but Nancy is nicer Wink

pilates · 30/09/2017 15:23

I wouldn't think the name Nancy is frilly, more frumpy

Chaffinch4 · 30/09/2017 15:39

Nancy Patricia would be a fabulous name! Not frilly. A good solid name to suit any type of girl.

Freddiewinifred10 · 30/09/2017 16:31

Nancy

misslomi · 30/09/2017 16:39

Nancy is gorgeous, goes lovely with Martha too Smile

Pemba · 30/09/2017 18:34

Yes I think Annie is perfectly fine as a grown up name. Think of Annie Lennox.

And as for sounding like a shortened name, as a pp pointed out, both Annie and Nancy are really short forms of Anne. Anne - Annie, that's simple. Nancy come from the old British custom of sticking an 'N' on the beginning of a short name beginning with a vowel Anne -Nan - Nancy. Just like Edward - Ned. Eleanor - Nell. That's where they come from.

So you could call her Anne or Anna and then pick one (choose Annie!) for the nickname to be used daily.

FourForYouGlenCoco · 30/09/2017 18:49

I absolutely love Nancy ❤️ It's on our list for a girl. Also love Anna - we are thinking of Anna nn Nancy, so I'd go for that if I were you. But if Anna is definitely not an option, just Annie, then I'd go straight for Nancy. Both lovely names though.

deste · 30/09/2017 18:52

Annie Lennox is actually Anne.

Pemba · 30/09/2017 20:03

Yes I know that (about Annie Lennox). But the point is, she is known professionally as Annie, and nobody thinks it's cutesy or inappropriate. She's a very serious woman.

early30smum · 30/09/2017 22:11

I think Annie is fine as a 'full' name and I definitely prefer it to Nancy. Martha and Annie sound lovely together.

Bytheseamummy · 13/10/2017 04:17

Thanks for all of your feedback guys. Our beautiful baby girl arrived yesterday and she is Nancy Patricia (Patricia after my Mum) Can't stop watching her! Smile Martha is a very proud big sister! X
