Help with a girls name

Marie541 · 28/09/2017 21:33

Why is choosing a girls name so difficult!

Here is the shortlist so far. Thoughts on these names. Which do people prefer/dislike. Which is your favourite?

Ideally I want something feminine, not too cutesy, and not too popular.

Shortlist is:

Violet
Keira
Lola
Lyla
Piper
Marnie
Jasmine

Help!

Thanks

Like your top 4. Not sure about the others. Piper is awful.

Keira would probably be my favourite

AutumnalLeaves38 · 28/09/2017 21:41

Lola. By miles.

GoingRogue · 28/09/2017 21:46

I love Marnie (and Marina) and it was on my shortlist. I've also never met a real-life one, so if you were looking for unusual that would probably be the best option.

Hate Violet (don't know why. And I know of about four under 4), Keira sounds a bit 90's, don't like Lola or Piper.

Like Lyla and Jasmine Smile

holidayqueriwifi · 28/09/2017 21:48

I love Piper!

emsyj37 · 28/09/2017 21:49

I love Jasmine. Not keen on any of the others. Violet is very popular now, but I remember having a neighbour with this name when I was a child and everyone called her 'Vi', which I thought was a really ugly shortening.
I have a Hazel, which I think meets your criteria. Other names on our list were Astrid, Claudia, Cressida.

RideSallyRide · 28/09/2017 21:49

I thoroughly dislike Lola and Lyla.
I'm never sure if I like Violet because some accents make it sound like violent.

boredofmyoldname · 28/09/2017 21:49

My favourite is Keira.
My least favourite is Piper.

Jasmine, Violet and Lola are nice.
I dislike Marnie and Lyla.

How about Eliza, Alyssa, Francesca, Hannah, Maci, Bethany, Carys, Becca, Cara, Cassandra (Cassie)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/09/2017 21:52

Jasmine is my favourite, followed by Lyla and Marnie.
Marnie Violet
Jasmine Lyla
Lyla Marnie
Not keen on the others, sorry.

Needalifeoverhaul · 28/09/2017 21:55

I love Lola and Marnie. I've never heard Lyla before so not sure what to make of it if I'm honest (sorry!) Dislike Piper and am kind of neutral about the others.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/09/2017 21:56

I don't like Lola or Lyla.
The others are gorgeous though.
Out of them all I'd go for Keira as you don't hear it much now.

euanthesheepiloveyou · 28/09/2017 21:57

Jasmine is lovely. Lola is nice too. Violet is OK but getting very popular. Lila or Lilah I quite like but not Lyla. Don't like any of the others much. Definitely not Keira & Piper is awful.

dobbyclub · 28/09/2017 21:59

I was going to call my next baby Marnie. I love it. However I've recently discovered it's a boy and don't have any boy's names to use!

Dustbunny1900 · 28/09/2017 22:30

Violet-cute, feminine, but a bit over done at the moment. You could do less popular flowers/plant ones like juniper, ivy, olive, holly, aster, sage, briar, clementine, daisy, flora, Rowan, bryony, sorrel.

Keira - knightly. That's all I can think of when I hear it

Lola-Lo lo li o lo la..the song. Yeah. It's a bit meh and plain imo.

Lyla-I think it's very pretty and graceful sounding. Especially Layla! There's also Lenore, Leona, laney, Lanette, Elaina , lark.

Piper-preppy and kinda trendy

Marnie-slightly underwhelming.

Jasmine-quite a dramatic and exotic sounding name, very pretty though

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2017 22:41

Violet - Vile-et
Keira - No
Lola - not sure
Lyla - lo. Laila is the way to spell it.
Piper - the mother in Carrie actress. Pied
Marnie - no
Jasmine - yes

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2017 22:43

No not lo. Laila is also pronounced Layla. Arabic for night. pronounced Lie-la (lie as in not sittiing or standing or fib)

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 28/09/2017 22:47

Jasmine is the only one I like

If you don't want anything cutesy then I'd avoid Lola

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2017 22:57

Violet is very popular

JennyLane · 28/09/2017 22:58

I'm afraid I don't love any of them, but I favour traditional names. If I had to choose it would be Violet purely because it's the most traditional, however I dislike it because it's too close to violent for my liking.
I encountered a little girl called Harriet (Hattie) the other day and thought it was adorable 😀 good luck!

Marie541 · 28/09/2017 22:59

When I say Lyla I mean Lila/Lilah. I actually love Layla but its already in the family. Keira and Jasmine are probably our front runner's at the minute as they are the 2 my very fussy husband really likes.
I always overthink girls names, i think there is too much choice! Boys names are so much easier.

Love Piper! Adorable and feisty

Happinesssssss · 28/09/2017 23:01

Don't mind Keira or Jasmine
Dislike Violet

Marie541 · 28/09/2017 23:02

I love Lola but the song really puts me off lol. I actually love Harriet and Hazel thats been suggested but I don't want a H name. (sibling has one)

Thanks though.

I have 2 children and 1 has a really tradional name and 1 has a more modern name so I need something thats not too much of either (if that makes sense)

Jasmine is the only one I like.

bridgetreilly · 29/09/2017 00:03

I really like Violet and Lola and I think they both fit your criteria.

You could also think about:
Elsie
Lois
Juliet
Annabel
Agnes
Tabitha
Dolores (which could be Lola for short)
Phoebe

CakeRattleandRoll · 29/09/2017 06:03

Jasmine. I would view Piper as v modern and Violet as quite traditional.
