Mabel

This is the only name my OH has agreed on/likes. I DO like it and it was my suggestion but the few people I have mentioned it to in passing, by saying stuff like 'for DD1 we considered Mabel' they have literally laughed out loud. This has put me off a bit. Is it too dated? Her name would be Mabel Eliza...I desperately wanted Eliza as a first name but OH isn't budging.

I love Mabel. It's gorgeous. Unfortunately it sounds awful with my middle name otherwise I would definitely use it if I have a second daughter

pipilangstrumpf · 26/09/2017 07:55

I prefer Eliza

SuburbanRhonda · 26/09/2017 07:57

It's very very popular these days, not that that's a reason not to choose it.

Brandnewstart · 26/09/2017 08:00

I love it! If I was going to have any more children, it would be my number 1 choice for a girl.
Just to add though, Russel Brand's daughter is called Mabel which may put some people off as it may be due to get more popular.

Charliedeservesamedal · 26/09/2017 08:02

I do too pip but OH is having none of it unfortunately, I only just got him to agree to it as a middle name.

I'm surprised you say that suburban as its number 210 in the official chart. My daughter's name is relatively popular though so doesn't put me off too much.

I love it

daisypond · 26/09/2017 08:08

It's fine, definitely coming back in fashion now. And maybe Mabel the singer has made the name more prominent too.

Bananacustardyum · 26/09/2017 08:10

Lovely name I would have called my DD Mabel but husband wasn't impressed.

Fekko · 26/09/2017 08:10

I think some of these names are due a revival. Ds was in nursery with a Mavis (she will be 13 now).

*I'm surprised you say that suburban as its number 210 in the official chart.

I admit it's anecdotal, I work in a primary school and we have two in our new reception class of 30.

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2017 08:13

Well, if "very very popular" is 1 in 1400 baby girls last year.........

The only Mabel I know is my dog. And she is very nice.

I like Maud a lot too.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/09/2017 08:15

I knew a Mabel 18 years ago,she was as cute as a button,it's a lovely name.

Vanillamanilla1 · 26/09/2017 08:29

Love Mabel !!
I love Bessie too but no more children for me

Ifonlylifewasimple · 26/09/2017 08:34

I love it! It was on my list. We didn't choose it because DP's grandad had an affair with a Mabel :) I haven't met any little Mabels.

saritah · 26/09/2017 08:41

Just my take, but Mabel strikes me as more "granny" than "vintage". What is DD1 called, if you don't mind revealing the name?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 26/09/2017 08:56

I think it's a lovely name but ..... if you desperately want Eliza, can you reach a compromise with something else? Marnie, Maisie, Marina?

Ionarocks · 26/09/2017 09:03

I know several little baby Mabels. I think it's becoming quite popular, people around here definitely wouldn't laugh.

It unfortunately conjures up nursing homes, support tights, commodes etc to me, and I suspect to more than just me. Eliza is lovely though. Similarly vintage but pretty.

PandorasXbox · 26/09/2017 13:19

Reminds of a rabbit/guinea pig/cow.

I think it will date fast like Maisie did.

Bobbybobbins · 26/09/2017 13:42

I also prefer Eliza. How about Martha? Meg?

PandaCat · 26/09/2017 14:33

I quite like it!

mummytwoh · 26/09/2017 15:36

I love it. Although I generally do love the vintage Granny names.

My advice - don't tell people your names until your baby girl arrives x

Adore Mabel. No one would blink at it in my middle class area.
