Suggestions for my (fussy) husband?

My DH has vetoed a lot of (beautiful) names, which I've suggested. To date he has suggested two names:

Jack
James

I don't like either of them enough to use, though they are fine. I quite like James, but I'm worried the royal baby might be a boy named James and don't really want the name to match the Royal baby. I am due well before DoC is, so can't change choice after they have their baby.

Fwiw my choice would be:

Gabriel Wilfred Surname
Rowan Wilfred Surname (which ends in -son, so not sure if Rowan goes all that well)?

Dh doesn't like them, but hasn't done a total Hmm face at me for the Gabriel suggestion. So maybe he'll come round to that. But I'm not sure.

The thing about Nicknames op is that they are out of your control. They will suddenly stick from something done or said at school or a club. May even be a short form of yr surname.

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 25/09/2017 15:38

Yeah true re nicknames. But surely Matt is pretty much unavoidable isn't it? If he's called Matthew that is!

I could definitely come round to Peter. I know two lovely ones which helps.

Nick (Nicholas)

amyboo · 25/09/2017 15:48

My 7.5 year old is a Matthew. No abbreviations as he doesn't like them. He has several other nicknames within the family, none of which are abbreviations of Matthew though.

FWIW, I have a 3 letter name and still got given a nickname. My brother has a name that is typically shortened and he has never used the shortened version - even when he was at school! You can't predict/control how a name will/won't be used...

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 25/09/2017 15:55

Same as you @amy; my nicknames are nothing like my name either!

I also know a Matthew who doesn't like Matt, so insists on Matthew. It's fine as he is confident enough to correct people, but it would be annoying for our DS if he hated Matt but wasn't confident enough to correct people. Or else he could love the nn Matt and insist we call him Matt. Hard to predict as you say, but I will say that most (not all) of the Matthews I know, get Matt at least some of the time.

Op I have a Shay but he always wanted to be Seamus!!

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 25/09/2017 15:57

Seamus is a great name. We have an Irish James in the family too, so Seamus would be a nice nod to the James and the Irish! Sadly it was a big thumbs down from DH (boo). Apparently there's a wrestler named Sheamus (yes, with an h shoved in there so people don't mispronounce)!

What about Inigo? Tobin? Crispin? Caspar?

Conrad? Ian?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/09/2017 18:21

Peter is nice. Known by all but not frequently used. Others of the same ilk are Matthew and Nicholas (the perfect name IMO).

(Kate Middleton's bro is called James so would she really name her son James? How boring)
