Ok so we have a very long time yet to think of names... but thoughts on a few below? We have a three syllable pretty English-sounding surname. We like traditional names, but not run of the mill John, James, George, Anna, Maria, Charlotte, Emily etc. These are a few so far (haven't discussed all with DH though!)

Boys:
Frederick (to be known as Freddy)
Ernest (to be known as Ernie)

Girls:
Wren (not sure on this anymore. Was going to be first choice girl name if we hadn't had a boy last time)
Roberta (to be known as Bobbie)
Iona
Isla
Claudia

DH has currently vetoed Eliza, Margot, Beatrice.

Thanks!

For a boy, I think little Freddy sounds adorable, but would also age Well, and go great with Rupert.

For a girl, I'm not personally a fan of Roberta. Wren sounds nice and goes well with Rupert, and I've only met one of them, albeit they were male.

Isla is the nicest name on your list for me personally, and it's not mismatched with Rupert. But then again, even if they were a little mismatched, I wouldn't let that deter you from picking the name that you and your hubby like the best!

Wren again though is really nice. I'm a big fan of unisex names, so I would personally choose that one. Best of luck to you and the DH! xx

and Freddy for a boy

daisypond · 08/09/2017 16:22

I like Claudia and Roberta for girls, Frederick for a boy, and possibly could come around to Ernest, though I'm not sure. Iona and Isla are OK -I think they're nice - but I tend to think you need to be Scottish to carry them off. A wren is is a common, nondescript, tiny brown bird. Why would you name your child after it?

Jooni · 08/09/2017 16:32

Frederick is great - strong, solid, fairly uncommon but traditional. Freddy is nice, though I know plenty.

Ernest/Ernie is marmite and I'm afraid I'm in the "don't like" camp.

Iona and Claudia go really nicely with Rupert IMO. Iona is my personal favourite - I think it's gorgeous!

Isla and Wren feel a bit modern/trendy next to Rupert, and Roberta is far too close IMO, even if known as Bobby. Rupert and Robert (and Roberta) are forms of the same name.

Eric for boy
Millicent for girl

Twistmeandturnme · 08/09/2017 17:14

Freddie, Frankie and Ernie are all names of a certain type of boy (cheeky chappie types) round here who wouldn't have a brother called Rupert.

Sebastian, Alasdair, Benedict, Ralph (pronounced Raiph)

Twistmeandturnme · 08/09/2017 17:15

Yes! agree with pp: Jonathon would be perfect.

PhuntSox · 08/09/2017 17:17

Roberta is perfect!

Uhohmummy · 08/09/2017 17:17

I love both your boys names - Freddy a bit more. (Also love Rupert)
For girls, I like Claudia from your list. Not keen on the "I" names. The others are ok. Francesca is a lovely suggestion. I also like Tabitha with Rupert.
Can you convince your DH on Eliza? I think it would be perfect.

FlippertyJibbet · 08/09/2017 17:18

All the middle class Fredericks I know are definitely Freds and the not so middle class Fredericks are Freddie's.

The Fred's all seem have brothers called Rupert, Casper, Felix etc for brothers.

The Freddie's seem to have more Ralph, Bobby, Archie type names for brothers.

umbongokid · 08/09/2017 18:17

Elsie, germentrude.

grufallosfriend · 08/09/2017 18:23

I love Iona! Beautiful and underused.

Frederick is ok but I dislike Ernest. How about Quentin or Roman?

Footle · 08/09/2017 22:33

Rupert is a variant of Robert , so wouldn't choose Roberta.
