Ok so we have a very long time yet to think of names... but thoughts on a few below? We have a three syllable pretty English-sounding surname. We like traditional names, but not run of the mill John, James, George, Anna, Maria, Charlotte, Emily etc. These are a few so far (haven't discussed all with DH though!)

Boys:
Frederick (to be known as Freddy)
Ernest (to be known as Ernie)

Girls:
Wren (not sure on this anymore. Was going to be first choice girl name if we hadn't had a boy last time)
Roberta (to be known as Bobbie)
Iona
Isla
Claudia

DH has currently vetoed Eliza, Margot, Beatrice.

Thanks!

Your girls name are much less nice than your boys name with the exception of Roberta. I also suggest Dorothea, Matilda, Clementine, Gabriella, Florence, Perdita, Cordelia and Jemima.

For boys I like Fred. I also suggest George, Arthur, Hugo, Guy, Felix, Hector, Louis.

Iknowit · 09/09/2017 07:31

I like Freddie and Iona. Not Wren and Wren doesn't go with Rupert.

fruitlovingmonkey · 09/09/2017 07:33

I like Wren and Iona but I'm not sure they go with Rupert. Roberta is too similar.

Suggestions:

Esme
Arabella
Fleur
Phillip/ Phillipa- known as Pip
Sasha (girl or boy)
Lysander
Humphrey

Be careful of Bobbie, I know a little girl with that name and it has always worn her so to speak.

First there was the comedic 'baby bobbie' which sounded silly. Now she's getting 'what? Your name is Bobble? Bumble? Berlobble?'

A lot of accents make it sound daft.

She isn't skinny so there has been the unfortunate Blobbie, but that was swiftly dealt with.

Just be aware that some names aren't the easiest to pull off.

Cailleach666 · 09/09/2017 07:59

Bobbie is a word for a penis in my region.

stevensupersquirrel · 09/09/2017 10:33

Henrietta?

Rupert and Roberta are too similar in my opinion (shame because I love Roberta). There's quite a few Freddies about currently which puts me off the name. Wren doesn't fit with Rupert for me, they seem very different styles. But don't know if that bothers you or not.

I'd expect Rupert to have siblings named:
Lawrence
Felix
Jasper
Sebastian
Tobias

Susannah
Jemima
Harriet
Lucinda
Florence

FizzyGreenWater · 10/09/2017 13:34

Watch out with Wren- I know someone who regrets it now as it just sounds like Ren. A few years of mispellings and hearing it said constantly and getting Rennie as a nickname have worn the romance of it considerably! Lovely written down. Quite ugly hearing 'Ren!' without the lovely baby bird association.

Biscuitsneeded · 10/09/2017 14:13

Rupert is a name that, like it or not, make a statement about its bearer. So you need names in a similar vein to go with it.

Tobias
Theo
Tristan
Sebastian
Henry
Gregory
Milo

Esme
Hermione
Tabitha
Phoebe
Josephine
Henrietta
Susanna

grufallosfriend · 10/09/2017 14:21

What statement does it make?

I know quite a few very different Ruperts so am wondering what they are all meant to have in common?

Biscuitsneeded · 10/09/2017 14:34

I've never met a Rupert who wasn't fairly posh. That may just be my experience, but I see other posters' suggestions have been in the same sort of vein. Nothing wrong with it as a name, I hasten to add, but I think a sibling would need a similarly posh kind of name.

grufallosfriend · 10/09/2017 16:28

But wouldn't that just reinforce a certain image?

grufallosfriend · 10/09/2017 16:30

And what if Rupert's family isn't actually 'posh' (whatever that means)? Should all his siblings still need 'posh' first names, to match Rupert? Smile

Biscuitsneeded · 10/09/2017 16:45

No the name doesn't have to match, of course. But it's disingenuous to suggest names don't have connotations for most people.

TrunkiTrailer · 10/09/2017 18:52

I agree that hat it's totally disingenuous not to admit that some names have clear connotations. You may wish they didn't but you should name your child aware that 99% of the British public will make assumptions based on the name you choose.

grufallosfriend · 10/09/2017 21:33

People can make assumptions if they wish to. And they have to be prepared for them to be wrong sometimes.

I still don't think that names necessarily need to 'match' as long as the parents like the names.

3becomes4 · 10/09/2017 22:08

Thanks for all the suggestions! Really dislike names like Lucia, Lucinda, and in fact pretty much all L and J girls names. Ralph was on an earlier list had forgotten that but not sure could have Rupert and Ralph! Can't use Florence or Susanna but good suggestions. Think we are set on Frederick which is good. Just the girls name... was like that last time girls names are hard! At the moment we are preferring Bobbie (Roberta) or Claudia. And yes like the railway children whoever said that!

Re posh... DH and I have fairly posh names. I wouldn't say I'm posh but DH (and his family most definitely) is. So fair point. Though I wouldn't say Rupert Grint or Rupert Murdoch are 'posh' neither Rupert the bear...

Ojoj1974 · 10/09/2017 22:12

I love Frederick and Claudia
My other suggestions would be-
Douglas and Albert
Victoria and Harriett

Mothervulva · 10/09/2017 22:14

Rupert and...

Georgina
Dominique
Imogen
Gwendolyn
Harriet.

SnackCentral · 12/11/2020 10:10

@3becomes4 What did you go for? I am in exactly the same position! I have a Rupert too, and my husband and i can't quite decide on names. All names suggested are on my list too!
