What do you think of the name Struan for a boy? I believe it's a Scottish name that means stream. We aren't Scottish - would it be weird to use it?

It's lovely, I know a couple of little Struans

nodogsinthebedroom · 07/09/2017 13:26

It's a lovely name. Personally I wouldn't use a name that was strongly associated with a country I have no connection with, but I wouldn't say it's "weird". Do you feel confident pronouncing it (I don't!).

sonlypuppyfat · 07/09/2017 13:29

As a mum to a child with an oddly spelt welsh name go for it, at least he'll stand out amongst the archies and alfies

weebarra · 07/09/2017 13:33

It's what I would have called DD is she'd been a boy. I know a couple, we are in Scotland though. I think it's fine to use it - can't imagine it in an English accent though.

saritah · 07/09/2017 13:53

Personally, if you don't have any Scottish connections (you're bound to be asked a lot) I'd avoid it. It looks like a misspelling of Stuart and Euan mashed together!

euanthesheepiloveyou · 07/09/2017 14:27

I like it a lot but wouldn't use it as I have no Scottish connections or heritage. People will.assume you do, but if you don't mind this then yes, go for it, it's great.

Dumdedumdum · 07/09/2017 14:28

I think you'd need to make up a back story about why you chose it! Other than that, it's a nice name.

Fabellini · 07/09/2017 14:30

I have a Struan, so obviously I'm biased. We're very Scottish though! Smile

heebiejeebie · 07/09/2017 14:31

Is it pronounced Ike straw or stew?

TheScottishPlay · 07/09/2017 14:34

Lovely name. If you like it for it's sound, meaning etc then use it.

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 14:38

Oh that is tricky it is very scottish I wouldn't, im scottish btw and some names cross over but I don't think Struan does i think itis a pronounciation thing.

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 14:43

It is pronounced Strew-an maybe Struans mum can clarify ☺

EmmaC78 · 07/09/2017 15:07

I know loads of Struan's as I live in Scotland so I really like the name but I would think it was odd for someone with no Scottish connection to use it.

buggerthebotox · 07/09/2017 15:11

Isn't it pronounced Strayne?

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 15:18

Strayne no it isn't pronounced straiyne maybe if you are Australian Grin

PaperdollCartoon · 07/09/2017 15:20

It's nice, very Scottish. I also think a bit odd to use a very country focused name if you have no connections to it though, DN has a Russian name though family has no Russian connections and it continues to mildly annoy me.

Notreallyarsed · 07/09/2017 15:20

It is pronounced strew-an not strayne. Well the one in our extended family is anyway. He has been known as strudel since birth though Grin

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 15:25

I have a french origin name which is fine everywhere imo but I guess there will be french names that would sound a bit bonkers if you had no french connection

Froginthehole · 07/09/2017 15:26

Thanks everyone, kind of what I thought really. It's a lovely name, just wish we were Scottish Confused

PoppyPopcorn · 07/09/2017 15:27

Strew-anne. Easy to pronounce! I know a couple but I am in Glasgow.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/09/2017 15:28

I think it's a lovely name.
I have a Niamh and we are not remotely Irish so the Scottish connection wouldn't bother me.

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 15:30

Op just say gt gt grandad was scottish 😀

NauticalDisaster · 07/09/2017 15:31

I love the name! It's on the list for baby number 3 but my other two gave very Scottish names as well.

MrsJayy · 07/09/2017 15:34

I think Niamh is ok for a non irish girl , Clodagh maybe not i just think names can be too you know

CaptWentworth · 07/09/2017 15:35

Stroo-ann.

Love it, but I'm Scottish. I know a couple of struans and they are lovely guys.
