I have always loved this name but unfortunately Amazon Alexa has come along and so im hesitant to go with it. Im not keen on Alexis or Alexandra etc. Do you think i should just go with it, or will it be mocked or cause confusion at home or other peoples houses?Hmmxx

I wouldn't

Applesandpears56 · 27/08/2017 20:08

I'd go for it on the basis a new model with a new name will surely be out soon

HeadDreamer · 27/08/2017 20:09

I wouldn't

ScarletSienna · 27/08/2017 20:13

I would go with it. It's enough of an established name to hold.

silkybear · 27/08/2017 20:17

I wouldn't. It is likely to become a household name like Siri is now...you just don't know how these things will pan out! How about Alexia? Different enough to work.

early30smum · 27/08/2017 20:29

I think it's fine.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/08/2017 20:43

Yes, go with it, it's a lovely name.

Chaffinch4 · 27/08/2017 20:50

I don't know what Amazon has to do with Alexa (or what Siri is for that matter). There are plenty of things (cars etc) which use names so I wouldn't worry about it personally.

peepoo · 27/08/2017 20:51

Please don't. She will get so annoyed being in people's houses when they can't say her flipping name.

SophieGiroux · 27/08/2017 20:53

Every time she goes to someone's house with an Echo and her name is called, an electronic voice will say "sorry I didn't get that". I would find an alternative if I were you.

ScarletSienna · 27/08/2017 20:55

Do that many people have one? I don't know anyone who does!

Liadain · 27/08/2017 21:12

I don't know all that many people who have one. It may well be replaced by a new line with a different name.

I wouldn't be too put off by it.

peepoo · 27/08/2017 21:12

Well not THAT many at the moment, but that will only increase.

hawkmcqueen · 27/08/2017 21:17

I was at a fun farm recently and a mum kept calling for her daughter, Alexa, eat up your lunch, Alexa, put that down etc. It just sounded like the advert to be honest and it really put me off the name.

So I think it would be a 'thing' and I wouldn't choose it.

Tunic · 27/08/2017 21:18

Siri has transformed but never had a name change, not sure that amazon will opt for a new name to replace Alexa when the technology improves. I can see it being around for years. But I don't think that anyone one would connect Alexandra with the echo and it is a lovely name.

WheresTheEvidence · 27/08/2017 21:21

It caused confusion when baby Alexa came to play and our Alexa kept coming alive

Applesandpears56 · 27/08/2017 21:26

Can't you just switch her off?!

bridgetreilly · 27/08/2017 22:01

I would avoid it, tbh. I think that although the technology will upgrade, Amazon are likely to stick with the name (as they have with the Kindle, for example). And even if it does turn out only to be around for a few years, it will get incredibly irritating very quickly.

Applesandpears56 · 28/08/2017 03:39

Re the upgrades you aren't going to be saying 'Alexa 2.1' though so I think they'll change the name to distinguish updated models

MsPassepartout · 28/08/2017 03:52

I'd avoid it in case the Amazon Alexa takes off in popularity.

I know a few people with an Alexa already.

AlphaStation · 28/08/2017 04:35

That service (Alexa) might not even be in business when the little girl has grown up as the internet changes so fast, who does seriously think that how we use the internet now would be the same way we use internet in five or ten years time, given how fast it has changed in the past? So I don't think there will be a problem with that name, actually. By the way, does anyone here remember the little dog-shaped Microsoft Assistant? The Office Assistant called Clippy was a user interface for Microsoft Office that assisted users by way of a clip-shaped interactive animated character, but I tended to set it to Power-Pup (the dog).... No, web services come and go, but good children's names stay on.

Oly5 · 28/08/2017 17:59

My niece is Alexa (named before the Amazon thing) and people love it. Amazon's version is likely to be obsolete by the time your daughter is old enough to care

kimlo · 28/08/2017 18:02

You can't switch Alexa off Shock. You can change it so she answers to Amazon instead.

Raines100 · 29/08/2017 07:36

I love the name Alexa. I also own one, but it still wouldn't put me off.

Sheitgeist · 29/08/2017 09:31

DH and I were watching a documentary about the Russian revolution recently. It was all full of Alexandra, Alexei, Alix of Hesse... our Echo dot kept interrupting!

It's a fab name that I've always liked (I nearly went for it with DD1 but opted for Alexandra), however the Amazon association would put me off now.
