Emma or Emily

Husband and I can't decide between the two, we both like both but he prefers Emily, I worry that it's more popular and I don't want her being Emily no2 or more in school. We have chosen a family name for the middle of Violet. Emily Violet or Emma Violet? We don't actually know it's a girl so have all this to come with boy names too!

Emmie. .

Swearwolf · 24/08/2017 11:23

Honestly, they're both quite popular so I wouldn't let that sway you!

ImperialBlether · 24/08/2017 11:23

Emily, so you can call her Millie (love that.)

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2017 11:24

We've gone James Bond with DD And she's just known as M.

SuperBeagle · 24/08/2017 11:59

Emily.

My best friend is an Emma and despite that I've never warmed to the name Blush

I like just Emmy too, but appreciate it's too "nicknamey" for many people.

WanderingTrolley1 · 24/08/2017 12:00

Emily.

Eskimo16 · 24/08/2017 12:03

I like Emily more too, it's more sweet I think. I am not sure of popularity but somehow I feel that won't be too much of a problem because surely she'll be the only Emily in your home :)

thethoughtfox · 24/08/2017 12:07

I know an Emmeline which is really pretty. She is known as Emmie. They are American.

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2017 12:44

I like Emma best, but Emily is nice as well.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 24/08/2017 13:11

Definitely Emma, for me.

rachrach2 · 24/08/2017 13:19

I like both a lot! Marginally I prefer Emily - I don't mind popular names at all though.

NameChange30 · 24/08/2017 13:21

Emma. Classic and less cutesy.
Both are popular so just pick the one you prefer.

DarkestBeforeDawn · 24/08/2017 13:24

Another vote for Emma here. Emmi is an adorable nn too!

BoredOnMatLeave · 24/08/2017 13:25

I prefer Emma. I know 4 Emily's under 2. However I think Emily Voilet is better than Emma Voilet.

Threeandabit · 24/08/2017 13:29

Emma

Emmeline is another option too.

MammieBear · 24/08/2017 14:37

Emmeline is like a smoosh of the two....

Sophronia · 24/08/2017 15:54

Emma as it's less popular nowadays.

KeiraH · 24/08/2017 16:03

Definitely Emma for me

HeyRoly · 24/08/2017 16:05

Emilys are ten a penny but I've yet to meet an Emma amongst DD(6)'s contemporaries.

FizzyGreenWater · 24/08/2017 16:52

Emma MILES better and far less popular.

Jooni · 24/08/2017 17:03

Emma is beautiful and timeless. A good strong name which will serve her well (I should know!) Wink

early30smum · 24/08/2017 17:04

Emma.

Serendipper · 24/08/2017 19:05

Thanks for all the responses. I'm leaning more towards Emma, just need to convince DH. My mum thinks Emma Violet sounds like Parma violets Hmm so choosing to ignore that. Emma also works slightly better with our surname which ends in an eee sound (think Dorey- similar ) and I'd rather avoid repeating the eee.

Emilia is a mash up of the two.

Singingforsanity · 24/08/2017 20:14

As long as you're not from Scotland I'd go for Emma. The reason behind my thinking - 'Eh'm a' (pronounced Emma) means 'I'm a' in Scots. Not great if your middle name or surname (or future surname) is a noun like Violet. That said, I've always loved both names so would've happily been called either!
