Emma or Emily

Husband and I can't decide between the two, we both like both but he prefers Emily, I worry that it's more popular and I don't want her being Emily no2 or more in school. We have chosen a family name for the middle of Violet. Emily Violet or Emma Violet? We don't actually know it's a girl so have all this to come with boy names too!

I have an Emma who is 3. Its a lovely classic name. I know of one other Emma who is also 3 plus a 10 day old one i met a the supermarket a few weeks back. Its not as common in my area as Emily. Esme is more popular than them both put together!

I also love Emmy as in Emmy Rossum but i understand that it is a shortening of Emmanuelle.

I would go for Emma - more timeless. Emily is very popular at the moment, and I think will sound a bit dated in a few years.

Yes, even 'classic' names are cyclical and go in and out of fashion, and can go through periods when they're out of favour and sound dated (I was given one 40 years ago when it was dreadfully old-fashioned, and is now v popular).

I prefer Emma, I also think it's a bit less popular if that's something that matters to you

For some reason I just like Emily more and feel it has more character. Nothing wrong with Emma though, it's pretty although maybe a little bland?
