'Chavvy' name.

So for baby no 1 we considered Caleb, however we had a beautiful girl instead. Was considering Caleb again for baby number 2 but saw a post the other day where someone referred to it as a 'chavvy' name 'like Kayden and Jayden' (their words not mine) do people agree with this comment?! I see it as a biblical name (and the singer from Kings of Leon, actually)
Other contender is Rafferty. Middle name will be James.

So what if a tiny minority of people think it's a 'chavvy' name? They're snobby idiots, no?

I think cohen is a bizarre choice for an intelligent woman but I don't think that should stop her.

MasterOfDisguise · 12/08/2017 09:52

My Rafferty is sat next to me right now. It suits him perfectly and we don't know any others. I think there were maybe 100 boys given that name the year he was born so it's uncommon without being unheard of. We chose it for deeply personal reasons but when I found the name meaning is 'the one who will prosper' I loved it even more.

Name preferences are personal. Calling names insulting or derogatory words like chav is just senseless. We just don't all like the same things, doesn't make anyone else's choice wrong or less valid than our own. I'd far rather my kids have a name that isn't universally loved but own that name by being a kind person, than be an unkind person with a name some faceless people on the internet consider to be acceptable.

OP, choose what you like, over time your child will just 'be' that name and you won't be able to imagine them called anything else regardless of whether it's a name that particularly suits whatever social class you nominally belong to.

Girty999 · 12/08/2017 10:10

I love Caleb and don't know any Calebs, I wouldn't say it was chavvy but every name can be totally different for people. Some names are lovely but I hate them as I was bullied by people of that name, I loved the name Ruby till I came across a devil child with that name, same with others, lovely names but vile children lol x

Brighteyes27 · 12/08/2017 10:12

Awandinmypocket I meant traveller

Frazzled2207 · 12/08/2017 10:21

I don't know any Calebs (north) so has no connotations for me sounds a perfectly reasonable name, obviously biblical.

Rafferty sounds very posh to me.

RoaryMouth · 12/08/2017 11:18

Caleb is a good name. Where I am Rafferty would be more chavvy.

squirre1 · 12/08/2017 11:25

I love Caleb and it's a name I would have chosen had me dds been boys.

I think it's really classy and I don't know any calebs.

catsarenice · 12/08/2017 11:45

I don't think Caleb is chavvy. Not that common around here - only know one and he's 11. On the other hand I think Rafferty is very 'try hard' - parents think they're being original but it is definitely getting popular.

Awandinmypocket · 12/08/2017 11:49

Nothing about being original it's just a name we like.
You can't win on Mumsnet...if it's popular you are boring if it's not you're try hard.
Anyway I am following PP advice and going with my gut! My daughter's name doesn't get a very popular reception on here either so I guess they will match 😂

Not chavvy where I live. Prefer rafferty though anyway, it was on my list too.

lazycrazyhazy · 12/08/2017 13:52

I don't find Caleb remotely naff. Biblical sounds Shakespearean (I know it's not but was thinking of Caliban I think).

MikeUniformMike · 12/08/2017 14:20

I really like Caleb, but it has become quite popular.
Rafferty is a bit um... and I don't like Raff (sounds a bit like one of the armed forces).

MikeUniformMike · 12/08/2017 14:21

Jadon isn't a biblical name but Jaden is.

TurquoiseOwl · 12/08/2017 18:31

@MikeUniformMike - since when? I've always known it to be Jadon.

As opposed to Jayden, which I got from the great book, The Star Trek Encyclopaedia. Wink

JollyNot · 12/08/2017 21:16

My teenage Caleb is an absolute sweetheart. He loves his name too.

SuperBeagle · 12/08/2017 21:26

Jadon is the biblical name.

PavoReal · 12/08/2017 21:35

Caleb is the worst behaved child by an absolute country mile in my DS's reception class.

I'm another one who shudders at the thought of using Cohen. Whilst I am not religious, I am respectful to those who are.

Coconutspongexo · 12/08/2017 21:40

I like Caleb, I only know one Caleb he's a lovely boy.

I was told my sons name is 'too posh for a scouser' once - people don't half come out with some shite when it comes to names.

Discobabe98 · 12/08/2017 21:41

Caleb definitely not chavvy around here infact quite the opposite (Belfast). I love Rafferty though, it's cool Grin

TurquoiseOwl · 12/08/2017 23:00

I thought so @SuperBeagle

badtime · 12/08/2017 23:21

I'm astonished that anyone thinks Rafferty is posh. I would just think it was on the level of other surname-names, and they are not usually considered posh.

Also, I agree with all the people who have said that Cohen should be avoided as a given name, as it is hugely disrespectful to Jewish culture.

Lemondrop99 · 12/08/2017 23:40

I think Caleb is a good, solid biblical name. I like it.
