'Chavvy' name.

So for baby no 1 we considered Caleb, however we had a beautiful girl instead. Was considering Caleb again for baby number 2 but saw a post the other day where someone referred to it as a 'chavvy' name 'like Kayden and Jayden' (their words not mine) do people agree with this comment?! I see it as a biblical name (and the singer from Kings of Leon, actually)
Other contender is Rafferty. Middle name will be James.

Caleb is just a normal name to me. I only know one, and he's very middle-class. Both parents university-educated professionals, etc.

I'm not a fan of Rafferty. Too posh! Lol.

Vitotitto · 12/08/2017 00:34

Not to OP. I think it's so so so rude (even not snobby) to call sone names "chavvy".

Just... Why to categorise names so badly? Posh, "chavvy", boring, dated, etc.

If that's a real name that's a real name.
People sometimes are so rude here (in this part of MN) Sad

motheroftwojedi · 12/08/2017 00:43

I have a Rafferty and love it. Never considered what others thought about the name, so am quite amused to hear of the vast array of reactions to the name.

I know a couple of people could Caleb in this area. Don't dislike it or think it has any of the connotations you mention in your OP but would definitely pick Rafferty over Caleb.

brieandcrackers · 12/08/2017 00:51

The only Caleb I know is the son of the local Baptist minister so I would associate it with religion too.

(and also the beautiful KOL frontman you've already mentioned)

timeistight · 12/08/2017 01:03

As long as you call him Cay-leb, not Car-leb as friends of mine have done!

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 12/08/2017 01:13

I think Caleb is a gorgeous name.

But feel free to ignore me as I have a Logan which is a bonafide chav name apparently. if you ignore the fact that he was named over 16 years ago when hardly any other bugger had heard of it

GavelRavel · 12/08/2017 01:17

gosh I'm SE and knos a few Calebs, all. solidly MC or UMC. I had no idea it had gone over to the dark side. What is it about the letter K? Does any boys name beginning with K now automatically get the chav connotation? When I was at school I knew a nice Kyle and always thought it a good name for a boy. Of course now you'd be a pariah (unless you were a chav, whatever one of those is these days and didn't give a fuck I suppose) - thanks to old Jezza Kyle I suppose and his clientele.

Anyway, I digress. I think Caleb James is a really nice boys name and round here, London SE, it wouldn't have any negative connotations I don't think. I find Rafferty a little effete and fey, for some reason, but I don't think it has particular connotations, I just don't like it. I only know one.

StarsAndStripes18 · 12/08/2017 02:59

I know 2 boys called Caleb and one of them is actually called Caleb James. He's best friends with my DC and is such a lovely sweet child with beautiful manners and absolutely not a bit 'chavvy' Hmm comes from a lovely, hard working and caring family, his name was chosen for the Biblical connections.
The other Caleb I wouldn't know as well but comes from a nice family and I believe his name was also chosen for the Biblical connections.
Where I am (in Northern Ireland) Caleb would be seen as not too common but a very normal name.

DressedCrab · 12/08/2017 07:00

Rafferty is an Irish surname, so certainly not posh.

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 12/08/2017 07:02

Much much prefer Caleb to Rafferty. It will be on my list if we have another boy. Really wouldn't care if people thought it was 'chavvy' (seriously are only William and Edward allowed now?!) as i know it's not but if you're worried about what people think then best not to go for it I guess.

Incidently I know a lot of middle class evangelical Christian types and it's very popular in those circles.

bookworm14 · 12/08/2017 07:58

Caleb is much nicer than Rafferty, which is a made up celebrity name. No one would be using it if Jude Law hadn't.

tutulover · 12/08/2017 08:17

Can I just say...."chavvy" names come and go. Caleb is a Hebrew biblical name that has stood the test of time over thousands of years.
Elijah, Jude, Caleb, Kora, Joshua, Rueben etc have all stood the test of time.

tutulover · 12/08/2017 08:20

Do you like Hugo? I've got a Hugo and we thought it might split people and some would love it and others not but every single person we know/meet absolutely loves it!! Never had such positive responses to a name. The positivity took us by surprise as he's child number 3.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2017 08:28

DressedCrab
Did you mean to come across as someone who looks down your nose at the Irish?

Awandinmypocket · 12/08/2017 08:29

Bookworm14 again, didn't know Jude Law had one so this isn't true.

Quite like Hugo, it was another consideration but we decided against it for reasons I can't even remember now

Apologies if it sounded like that. It was early. Blush

Surname as first names aren't posh, I was just defining its origin, no offence intended.

Ankleswingers · 12/08/2017 08:33

Rafferty and Caleb are both not my cup of tea.

Please don't use the term ' chavvy'. It can be very offensive to some people.
You might not have used it in your op but you certainly put it in the title.

Awandinmypocket · 12/08/2017 08:35

The 'air quotes' show it wasn't my wording. I didn't call the name chavvy...someone else did.

OP posts:
Awandinmypocket · 12/08/2017 08:36

Pretty sure that was obvious.

shinysinkredemption · 12/08/2017 08:48

I think Rafferty and Caleb are both lovely names. Any perceived connotations could change completely by the time your DS grows up anyway. Look what Viz did to Sharon and Tracey.

Interesting to learn about Cohen, I've known people with the surname but never heard it used as a forename.

fredmay · 12/08/2017 09:01

Naming a child is such a personal thing, whether 'posh' or 'chavvy' it's up to you and what you like not what other people think! My children have names that I like not what other people thought of them. My nephew is Kayden and I DO NOT think this is 'Chavvy' it's a lovely name for a beautiful boy... I suppose what I'm getting at is go with your gut and not what other people think if you like a name go for it it's up to you

woodhill · 12/08/2017 09:25

Caleb sounds ok to me, not keen on Rafferty, think of Baker Street sax solo

Shadowboy · 12/08/2017 09:31

I only know non- chavvy Caleb as long as you don't stick a K in front of it, then it's lovely.
