Toby/Peter/John - penis?!

Hi

Considering one of the above for soon-to-be-DS.

Good , solid names I thought...But the other day a male friend said did I realise they were all nicknames for penis? That's rather put me off!
I've heard of John Thomas as a nn, but never Toby or Peter or John without the Thomas!
Would anyone else see this associations in these names?

Peter Parker gets called Penis Parker in the latest Spiderman film, but I don't think it's a regular thing.

I've never heard Toby or John used as such. Rubber Jonny perhaps.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 03/08/2017 23:31

Only Justin makes me think of a penis, those names are absolutely fine. What is the Toby connection??

Hakarl · 03/08/2017 23:31

If 'penis' is anyone's first thought on seeing any one of those names, I'd say they have an unhealthy obsession with penises. Especially if meeting a little boy with the name!

I've never heard of any of those used as a nickname for penis. I could believe that they are used in that way, but honestly it's not like you're thinking of naming him Dick.

nooka · 04/08/2017 05:17

Peter could be from 'show Peter the porcelain' perhaps? There is an old mumsnet thread discussing Toby = penis and it seems to be something used by some people in some parts of Scotland. I'd not make the connection with any of those names. Richard (Dick) or William (Willy) perhaps, although both names are perfectly acceptable and mainstream (just not with those diminutives any more).

SpikeGilesSandwich · 04/08/2017 06:04

It's "show Percy the porcelain" isn't it? Never heard Peter used in that context. Toby was in our top three names and I don't get any penis connection. John, as you say, only with Thomas.

If it helps, my DH calls his willy Geoffrey. Grin

ABCFamily · 04/08/2017 06:10

If you asked me what John was slang for, I'd say a pimp, toilet, or condom before I associated it with a penis (John Thomas on the other hand is pure peen). However I would have to be prompted to do so, and wouldn't automatically associate any of those things with someone who introduced themselves as John. And I've met a lot of men called John/Jonathan/Johnny!

Haven't heard of either Toby or Peter being used as a nickname for penis.

SuperBeagle · 04/08/2017 06:12

Percy is the penis name, and it's "point Percy at the porcelain".

Johnny is old slang for a condom. Not sure it's well known anymore, and if it is, it's not widely used.

Never heard of the Toby thing.

MammieBear · 04/08/2017 09:49

Don't worry about it, children will come up with all sorts off nicknames for any name, don't let that put you off using your favourite name.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/08/2017 11:06

John is one of my favourite names, take no heed of your male friend.

MurrayMoo · 04/08/2017 13:39

Never heard of any of those associated with penis. How odd.

SerfTerf · 04/08/2017 13:45

It wouldn't listen. They're good names with no real penile undertones.

MurrayMoo · 04/08/2017 13:49

Penile undertones 😂 made me lol

FemaleDilbert · 04/08/2017 13:50

Peter is definitely associated with penis in America, but I wouldn't make the connection in the UK

SerfTerf · 04/08/2017 13:55

@MurrayMoo Smile

Alexandrite · 04/08/2017 16:42

What about Willy?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/08/2017 18:51

😂

MikeUniformMike · 04/08/2017 19:50

John Thomas
Denis

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/08/2017 19:54

I once met a child called John Thomas - and that wasn't an unfortunate convergence of his first and last name, that was all his first name. At that point I don't think anyone had told him his name was 'penis' but it was surely only a matter of time.

By themselves; John, Toby and Peter are fine.

BewareOfDragons · 04/08/2017 19:56

Peter = Penis to me.

John Thomas = Penis

Not heard Toby used that way, though.

Haffdonga · 04/08/2017 19:59

Nonsense. Anyway, if you followed that rule you would never be able to call a child Richard (dick) or William (willy) or Roger,or a girl Frances or Mary come to that.

RapunzelsRealMom · 04/08/2017 20:11

Toby is definitely used in place of penis (DH's DM called his a Toby as a young child Hmm)

Peter - I wouldn't have thought about a link

And definitely not John. John Thomas, yes, or Johnson, but not John

akorda · 04/08/2017 20:13

Have heard that Toby means penis in some parts of Scotland/NE England

Never heard of John on its own meaning that

Peter- as someone else says above, I think the Peter-penis connection is an American thing!

SnowWhite33 · 07/08/2017 13:52

What a load of nonsense

Peter and John are some of the oldest most commonly used names.
I would rather associate it with Peter Rabbit tbh.

Love Tobias/nn Toby and again never heard nor do i believe in any such silly jokes.

People have various nn for penis dont let it put you off

Singingforsanity · 07/08/2017 22:27

Toby is the only one which would make me think of a penis (NE Scotland) but I'm sure after the initial introduction I'd think of the person rather than that connection! John (without Thomas) and Peter wouldn't make me think of it at all. Peter's lovely btw.

fionadal · 19/08/2017 21:22

I remember my Scottish cousin calling his penis a Toby, but haven't heard of it used like this elsewhere
