Kimi - thoughts please!

My other half is a HUGE formula 1 fan and his favourite driver of all time is kimi raikkonen hence his suggestion for the name for our wee one due in November! When I say it out loud I actually really like it but I'm not sure we would be condemning our wee boy to lots of teasing!? Help!

Just to add that it's a Finnish name pronounced keemi rather than kimmi!

Obviously you can call your child what you like and I don't buy into the idea that certain names rule out a career as a high court judge/are guaranteed to result in bullying..

Having said all that.. it is still a terrible name. Sorry.

I know a baby kimi! His mum is Finnish and very well to do. He's a cutey and it suits him. It's funny how when you 'know' a name it takes on positive connotations.

I'd assume the child was a girl and it was pronounced Kimmy.

It just makes me think of Kimi from the Rugrats in Paris movie, though I appreciate that's a niche reference.

Unless you live in Finland people will assume it's 'Kimmy' and that he's a girl.

I know it as a regular Finnish name and I like it but you might get bored of people pronouncing it Kimmy. Räikkönen's name is almost always mispronounced on TV in the UK, for instance.

I really like it, but I would probably assume Kimmy until corrected then I'd get it right. I do like boys with gender neutral names though I have a Jude and he is obviously a boy!

I like it. Yes I would need to be told how to pronounce it on meeting but it's a simple name to get used to. Never heard it before but I actually like it alot

I think it's fine. I know a male Kim and he doesn't have any problems with his name.

I think you can make it your own but that would be a lot easier in a multicultural type place (think London rather than Whitehaven).
Could anglicise the spelling to get pronunciation right, too, so make it Keemi.

Kimberley was originally a boy name.

I like F1 - I don't hate the name, there are just so many other F1 inspired names I love more.

I always think of Kim as a boy's name I suppose because of Kipling. I always assumed it had become Kimberley and become used for girls in the USA and that had gradually taken over. I therefore wouldn't be surprised to find a Kimi of either gender.

I like Kim for a boy, not sure about Kimi though.

My mate had a cat called Kimmy and it reminds me too much of that, I think.

I'd think girl and pronounce it like Kim with a y on the end.

Thanks for all of your replies - I can see that it divides opinion! I can see that the pronunciation issue could be a tricky one but then I've always had that issue with my own name and lived to tell the tale! Definitely not written off the list yet :)

It is not pronounced as either Keemi or Kimmi. In Finnish you pronounce every letter exactly as it is. It is Ki-mi. Simple as that.
