What are your thoughts on Oona for a girl? Also do you prefer Oona or Una?

I think it's a name which sounds very different in different regional accents.

I would pronounce Oona and Una differently too: oo-na or you-na.

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/07/2017 20:12

Oh that's interesting. I would pronounce them both oo-na

It's a pretty name though I do t like the spelling of Oona I prefer Una.
I'd pronounce both Oo-na but a lot of people may pronounce Una as you-na

alltouchedout · 18/07/2017 20:15

I like Oona and don't like Una (I'd pronounce them as bridget says).

SuperBeagle · 18/07/2017 20:16

I would pronounce Oona and Una differently. I used to live on a Una St and it was pronounced you-nah.

I don't like either though, honestly.

theresamustgo · 18/07/2017 20:18

Why not Oonagh?

villainousbroodmare · 18/07/2017 20:19

You-na? Grin I'd say you-na'd be in a minority of one there!
The original Irish form has a fada on the U, denoting a long oooo sound. So Úna. Una is let's say a mildly anglicised form, dropping the fada but is ime always pronounced OO-na as well. Oona or Oonagh are alternative anglicised forms.

Synecdoche · 18/07/2017 20:19

I'd pronounce them the same but I like the 'Una' spelling better. Lovely name!

villainousbroodmare · 18/07/2017 20:21

So surprised at the the pronunciation dilemma. Question for the You-na people... how would you pronounce the car (Fiat) Uno?

xrayyankeezulu · 18/07/2017 20:25

I would pronounce them the same but definitely prefer the spelling of Una

Mrsknackered · 18/07/2017 20:27

My Irish friend is Úna, pronounced Oona. I would still pronounce is Oona either way though.

MadMags · 18/07/2017 20:33

Yes, Úna for real authenticity.

I'm not sure why anyone would pronounce it you-na Confused but I'm Irish so that's probably why!

Heratnumber7 · 18/07/2017 20:33

In Wales Una would be Yewna. As in Yewna Stubbs.

Oona would be ooh-na.

Heratnumber7 · 18/07/2017 20:34

Fiat uno is italian. So pronounced ooh-no

squoosh · 18/07/2017 20:36

In England they pronounce Una as You-na. Una Stubbs for example.

MadMags · 18/07/2017 20:36

And Una is Irish, pronounced Oona.

squoosh · 18/07/2017 20:37

But to answer your question OP I'd go with Una (Úna) because Oona looks a bit silly.

Maudlinmaud · 18/07/2017 20:37

Beautiful name.

greathat · 18/07/2017 20:38

My Mum's an Oonagh so I like it :D

squoosh · 18/07/2017 20:38

And Una is Irish, pronounced Oona.

Yes, and widely pronounced as you-na in the UK. Better to be aware of this before picking the name wouldn't you think?

villainousbroodmare · 18/07/2017 20:59

Sure, as well to be aware of it [shocked to the core] but it's an Irish name whether it's in Ireland or England or anywhere else so it adheres to the fairly simple conventions of Irish pronunciation.

squoosh · 18/07/2017 21:03

Yes but I suspect you might be swimming against the tide with Una. It's not like they've only recently started mispronouncing it, Una Stubbs must be nearly 80.

Jooni · 18/07/2017 21:10

I love it! Prefer Oona spelling, though I'd pronounce both the same. I've never heard "you-na" before!

Sophronia · 18/07/2017 21:31

I like Oona!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/07/2017 21:56

Oona. How about Ulla ?
