What are your thoughts on Oona for a girl? Also do you prefer Oona or Una?

I prefer spelling Una, looks neater than the double O at the beginning - I'm English near London and have never heard of this being pronounced youna, to me it would be pronounced Oona

StarHeartDiamond · 19/07/2017 16:19

Not keen. How about Orla?

mamalovesmojitos · 19/07/2017 16:28

Una better spelling, assuming it's pronounced ooona. It may be pronounced you-na in parts of England, but I personally have never come across this.

Caoimhe can be pronounced as Kweeva (mostly, but not confined to Southern Ireland), or Keeva (mostly, but not confined to Northern Ireland). Differing pronunciations arising from local dialects.

Úna is lovely and far nicer than Oona. Surely people in the UK will get used to the pronunciation? There's Úna Foley from the Saturdays, not sure if there's any other well known Únas?

Best of luck with your baby.

SumAndSubstance · 19/07/2017 19:21

I'm another English who has never heard the you-na pronunciation, not even anyone pronouncing Una Stubbs that way. What about Una Thurman? Anyway, I prefer the Una spelling.

Jooni · 19/07/2017 19:29

It's Uma Thurman, but it's definitely an "oo" sound at the start. I didn't know it was "You-na" Stubbs either!

dotdotdotmustdash · 19/07/2017 19:31

In Scotland Una is pronounced Oonah.

Scot here I would definitely pronounce Una as Younah.

firawla · 19/07/2017 19:39

I like the look of the Oona spelling. There was a baby called this in the bed opposite when I had dd at Christmas! Not sure the spelling they'd gone for though but I thought it was really nice and not something you hear too often

BroomstickOfLove · 19/07/2017 19:40

Úna because it looks nice, but slightly different from Una Stubbs.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 19/07/2017 20:17

I love it, We had a lovely family friend growing up called Una if spell it that way. All the Una's I've met have been fun and pretty so it's a good name to me.

dillytilly · 19/07/2017 20:26

both are beautiful !
