Hi, my husband and I are expecting our first baby girl and are stuck for a name. We seem fixated on one but celebs knabbed it which means it's not out but a dampner iyswim. We are both alternative so would love a dark name that's beautiful. Surname is spelt differently but same as Kirstie from location.

So far we have

Luna Fae (fairy in French)
Luna Celeste
Serephina

Undecided on Tabitha (is it cats name?), Willow (what if they are not svelte? Like naming a weedy boy Thor iyswim).

Love but can't have Lily or Violet (already in use), Persephone (too close to mine by sound) and Wednesday is bit try too hard but could be a middle name if she's born on a Wednesday ;-)

All ears if anyone has any ideas. Don't mind more out there names/ spiritual/ natural or unisex names.

DowntheTown · 12/07/2017 23:14

Albemarle - met one once and loved the name (though didn't use it ourselves.)

Moodycoo · 12/07/2017 23:14

I'd vote for Tabitha (cos it's my little girls middle name ❤️)

DARK doesn't necessarily = bad Hmm

When someone says "dark" I immediately just think a person would like a more gothic or perhaps exotic name for their child.

I haven't had chance to rtft. Has anyone suggested Rowena yet?

AstridsMama · 12/07/2017 23:33

Yuki means snow- kind of the opposite of the effect you're after!
Yuki Onna just means woman of the snow.

Undine/Ondine
Selena
Morven
Rowan

Could someone explain why Astrid is seen as dark? It means divine beauty or divine strength. Are they bad things?

Mara is the Scottish Gaelic world for "sea". Ceòl-na-Mara means "song of the sea".

Cherry

Elfrida - love it, but didn't have a girl (and probably wouldn't have been braves enough if I had). Elfie is a great nickname.

DangerMouse17 · 12/07/2017 23:48

People really need to stop seeing something dark as "bad". Really gets on my wick!

Reluctant2ndtimer · 12/07/2017 23:48

I was going to suggest Morrigan which is my middle name, but I've just looked it up for the first time ever and it's way darker than I thought! My sister is named after the goddess of love and beauty and I'm named after the phantom queen, thanks mum and dad!

trinitybleu · 12/07/2017 23:49

I have a Tabitha and if we were to have another she would be Willow or Meredith. Tabitha means gazelle in Hebrew so not very dark ...

I love Luna too and to hell with the HP connection (my DD is a big fan actually) but it wouldn't go with the surname.

tempnamechange77 · 12/07/2017 23:53

Thanks DangerMouse, I understand better now, 'Gothic' makes more sense to me.

I was thinking of Dark wizards (a la Harry Potter) dark magic etc.

Elbi · 12/07/2017 23:59

There's also Nox or Nisha, both of which mean night.

pieceofpurplesky · 13/07/2017 00:05

Pearl (I just love the name)
Morgana
Chandra (moon)
Aura
Jinx
Tempest

NerdyBird · 13/07/2017 00:25

Livia, as in Empress of Rome. Although she'd probably spend rather a lot of time saying 'no, not Olivia, just Livia.

or, Theresa May Grin

Ted Hughes characterises Assia Weevil as Lilith in one of his poems , and that is always what I think of first when I hear it now, ahead even of biblical apocrypha or myth. It has so many sad, woman-blaming associations.

octoberfarm · 13/07/2017 03:07

I think Kiera means "little dark one", which might fit quite nicely? Also love Juniper!
