And?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/07/2017 12:39

No sign of an M.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 12:42

How many people pronounce all words according to official dictionary pronunciation? Very few. If that many.

You're probably not even aware that you don't pronounce the d in handbag.

MrsHathaway · 15/07/2017 12:51

There was no d in that linked pronunciation Grin

Jules2 · 15/07/2017 13:56

What a relief! Frances - a nice 'normal' name. I thought it was going to be some nonsensical whimsy or an acronym or a car name (e.g. KC, Jaycee, Popee, Corsaire, Volvo, Saab!). I would say Fr-ahn - sis - long 'a' but I'm a southerner.

DragonsandDungeons · 15/07/2017 14:21

Fran-sis

I'm from Birmingummm, this is definitely a north/south thing as pp say

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 15/07/2017 14:24

Bir-mun-um, eh?

Alleycat1 · 15/07/2017 17:35

I'm with Trills On page 1

Wassock · 15/07/2017 17:49

Love accents...why the fuss? I'm from the north (so would say path, bath, grass, Frances, no 'r' in the middle) but now live in the south with 'r's abounding! People here love my accent and I love theirs!! It's great that we all speak the same language but with our beautiful regional dialects to show where we are from. Surely we should celebrate this, not argue the toss! Good lord!

libra101 · 15/07/2017 18:19

I'm a Northern Frances, and my name is usually pronounced Frances in this neck of the woods.

However, I'm always called Frankie, and only those who don't know me well use my real name.

Even though I'm female, people often spell the name incorrectly using the male version spelling.

Blueink · 15/07/2017 18:33

Ha ha I'd say it somewhere in between... more Fran-ces...my accent is all mixed up between West Country, Northern, Southern...
I go with a 'soft' d in Han(d)bags and San(d)wiches - if speaking quickly.
People will say it how they say it. Don't choose it if it will irritate you. Choose Fran (for a girl) or Frank (for a boy) instead Wink

Craigie · 15/07/2017 18:35

FRAN-SIS. It hasn't got an R before the N. would sound weird if you pronounced it that way.

everythingissoblinkinrosie · 15/07/2017 18:39

I'm northern. I'd never say Frah-nsis. But if you did and you're southern I wouldn't care. If I was a northern teacher based in the south I still wouldn't say Frah-nsis. Because that's not how I talk.

Mrstiggywink49 · 15/07/2017 18:47

It might be shortened to Fran tho!! Even if you pronounce is Frarncis!

Sophronia · 15/07/2017 18:50

It's definitely not just a North vs. South thing, or does the South West of England not exist? Mumsnet is so SE/London-centric!

Dannysmam1 · 15/07/2017 19:01

My middle name is Frances and in all my '50' Shock years I have only ever heard it pronounced as FRAN-SIS. That's with Southern and Midland accents Smile

mathanxiety · 15/07/2017 19:04

Yes, Hannah rhymes with banana. (To the poster upthread asking about it).

Rhymes with banana in the US too.

Blueink · 15/07/2017 19:07

Hannah & banana do not rhyme in my world - only in a US show

Tapandgo · 15/07/2017 19:10

Say as it is spelled
Fran - ces
(A family member is lucky to have that name)
Not sure why OP put an additional R in.
A boy would be Fran - cis.

Blueink · 15/07/2017 19:11

Sophronia - I mentioned the West Country just before your post, others mentioned the Midlands

Tapandgo · 15/07/2017 19:11

And - her name never been shortened.

Sara107 · 15/07/2017 19:26

I always say the d in handbag and sandwich. Hannah and banana definitely do not rhyme with anyone I know. And I never have additional r sounds in words like Frances. But my DD who has an English accent does hear 'r's in those words and will often spell words like 'path' as 'parth'.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/07/2017 19:28

Yes, Hannah rhymes with banana.

Wtf?! Like, how? Just how?!

Hann-ah
Ba-narn-a

Unless you're saying "ban-AN-a" which is just wrong Confused

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 19:32

Christ, a million posts later and people still don't understand the concept of DIFFERENT ACCENTS.

DragonsandDungeons · 15/07/2017 19:33

I understand different accents but I don't know what accent rhymes Hannah and Banana other than some American ones
