Irish girls name. Pronounced Row-sheen. My sister is 34 weeks preggers and is struggling for a girls name. Would appreciate if I could get your opinion on it Smile

I absolutely love the name Roisin. Tell her to look no further ! 😄

chowmeinchick · 07/07/2017 21:14

I don't like it sorry.

Migraleve · 07/07/2017 21:16

Depending on where you live you may be saddling your child with a name they have to explain several times a day

RiverTam · 07/07/2017 21:16

The one I knew was more of a Roh-sheen. Which I prefer to Row-sheen.

Laladog · 07/07/2017 21:17

She lives in Scotland at the moment. Don't know how common it is there?

If you are in Ireland it's fine, it's a common enough Irish name and there'll be no pronunciation or spelling issues. I don't know any young ones though, all teens or older.

In the UK you'll get people pronouncing it ROSHeen, which is wrong & annoying, and it'll get spelled wrong a lot too.

As for me, it's OK but not one of my favourites. I like the look of it written down more than I like the sound of it spoken.

27Harper · 07/07/2017 21:24

Personally I think it's a nice name. Yes it may have pronunciation issues bit it's a lovely name regardless. Congrats to your sis OP! xx

ClarkWGriswold · 07/07/2017 21:30

It's ok, not one of my favourite Irish names. I think there are prettier ones. Niamh is my favourite Gaelic name

Wolfiefan · 07/07/2017 21:31

I would say ro sheen. Not row (like row your boat) sheen.

DrEllie · 07/07/2017 21:31

I have a Roisin and it can be a little difficult at times with spelling and pronunciation (we're in England) but we get by. I don't like it when people say Rosh-een rather than Ro-sheen but it's a minor issue. DD7 seems happy enough with her name so far! We did give her a plain middle name though in case it was too much of a hassle.

27Harper · 07/07/2017 21:41

It's a lovely name OP, I wouldn't worry too much. There are more difficult Irish names to spell and pronounce lol xx

Branleuse · 07/07/2017 21:56

lovely name

TaggieRR · 07/07/2017 21:57

Pretty name.

SallyGinnamon · 07/07/2017 22:08

It's always tricky having an Irish name in England. (Great in Ireland obviously! ). I've worked with a Siobhan and a Niamh. Both spent endless time correcting pronunciation and or spelling.

implantsandaDyson · 07/07/2017 22:09

I'm not a fan, I find it a bit dated. I went to school with quite a few, there's a few in my extended family. To me it's a bit like Siobhan, Sinead, Niamh - very 70s/80s like Joanne, Nichola.

lalaland1985 · 07/07/2017 22:23

It's lovely! There won't be an issue wit it in Scotland. I have a Saoirse and don't have too many problems.

MaudGonneMad · 07/07/2017 22:24

Don't forget the fadas: Róisín

Margery80 · 07/07/2017 22:43

Drama alpaca....pronouncing it ROSHeen is not wrong. This version is the pronunciation for Derry and Donegal. I should know, its my name. OP you should be fine in Britain with this name.....every one here who "knows" the name pronounces it ROWsheen.

elektrawoman · 07/07/2017 23:04

It's a nice name, DD (5) has a girl in her class called Roisin. We do all say ' rosheen' but her mum and dad haven't corrected us yet!!

DramaAlpaca · 07/07/2017 23:06

Margery80, happy to be corrected & didn't mean to offend.

Pronunciations of names vary a lot in Ireland depending on region & dialect. Where I am, much further south, it is invariably ROE-sheen & comes complete with fadas.

TartanDMs · 07/07/2017 23:07

It's pretty. One of my friends is called Roisin, she's in her early 30s.

Sophronia · 07/07/2017 23:24

Lovely!

DarkedonZilla · 08/07/2017 02:37

Love it. Really pretty.

emilybrontescorset · 08/07/2017 07:01

I like it.

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/07/2017 07:02

I think it's lovely
