Clementine. NN Clemmie. I love it. This will be last baby (4th) so Iast chance for this.

Trouble is, it has the same number of syllables as our last name. And the last syllables rhyme.

So think 'Clementine Hannodyne' (not our real surname but a close approximation).

So can I? Pretty please?

Honest opinions very much wanted. Be as brutal as you want.

Love love love Clementine and Clementine. I like Clemency but much prefer the first two

squoosh · 05/07/2017 19:40

Oh no, I think Clementine Heseltine would sound far too comedic! Clemency works much better.

SouthChinaMorningPost · 05/07/2017 19:46

Clementine Ballantine? maybe not...

SloeGinRocks · 05/07/2017 19:53

Do it!

Stardustandicecream · 05/07/2017 19:58

Clemancy - yes yes

SoupDragon · 05/07/2017 20:02

Trouble is, it has the same number of syllables as our last name. And the last syllables rhyme.

No, no and no again. Having a rhyming name is utterly utterly shit. Trust me.

Clemency is an awful name. I've no idea why it appears favourable onMN. It should be shut in the name Cupboard of doom along with Chastity never to see the light of day again.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2017 20:11

I don't think they're actually called Bannantine or Heseltine.

I think rhyming names are fine. Mary Berry sounds a bit but not quite rhyming. Neville Neville got away with it.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 05/07/2017 20:15

BertrandRussell what are you on about? Children do not have to say their full name several times a day whilst at school. Why would they?

OP go for it! If you like name and are planning for yo mainlygo by the nick name you've chosen there isn't really a problem. And when people find out her full name, 'oh! Your name rhymes' 'yeah, I know.' Isn't going to be a traumatic conversation to have.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 05/07/2017 20:16

Sorry for errors!

rightwhine · 05/07/2017 20:21

Go for it.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 05/07/2017 20:24

'Your name rhymes' followed by it being chanted in a mocking voice for her entire school career would be utterly hideous, particularly as there's nothing she can do to change her name until she grows up. Clemency would be much better.

Rhyming named just sound silly. Even posh rhyming names like Clementine Something-tine.

BuzzKillington · 05/07/2017 20:43

I would be put off as it's the new Millie/Mollie/Amelia/Emilia popular type name. I know of 3 Clemmies under 3.

And if it rhymes with your surname - I'd avoid.

And as my mum rather rudely and possibly on purpose mispronounced it, it's horribly close to Clammy!

SoupDragon · 05/07/2017 20:44

I think rhyming names are fine.

You're wrong I'm afraid.

'Your name rhymes' followed by it being chanted in a mocking voice for her entire school career would be utterly hideous

This, absolutely this. And it's not just at school, it follows you into the workplace.

It's shit. Don't be so cruel to your child.

SuperBeagle · 05/07/2017 21:25

I wouldn't.

It'd be like being called Kylie Riley or Larry Harries. Daft and embarrassing. Sometimes you just have to accept you can't use a name because it doesn't work with the surname.

But I also don't like Clementine or Clemmie regardless.

mortificado · 05/07/2017 22:03

Do it! Beautiful name!
I want to add this to my name list! Blush

ScarletSienna · 05/07/2017 22:57

My sister's name rhymes along the lines of Claire Gair. As strong in rhyme as that. It's been something she has had to cope with - every single person comments on it, her name is always remembered (not always a good thing) and it brings attention where it isn't always wanted. Just because it rhymes.

So no I really wouldn't.

mikado1 · 05/07/2017 23:07

No to the rhyme but French Clemence is beautiful and you can shorten, although I'll admit 'phlegmy' and 'clammy' definitely off-putting. I'd have loved Clement nn Clem for my utterly Clement ds2 but I hadn't a hope :(

HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 23:36

Just to clarify the 'tine' of Clementine would rhyme with the last syllable of surname which is 'dine'.

Neither is pronounced teen.

So the names rhyme but only the 'ine/yne bits...

OP posts:
HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 23:37

Surname also has 3 syllables but first 2 are completely different to Clementine. God. I hope this makes sense!

OP posts:
HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 23:39

So it's not as blatant as Claire Gair or Kylie Riley.

But yes...still technically a rhyming end.

OP posts:
Enidblyton1 · 05/07/2017 23:48

Why do you want to pronounce it Clemen-tyne out of interest? I think it's so much nicer pronounced Clemen-teen. Then it wouldn't rhyme with your surname - problem solved.

MiaowMix · 06/07/2017 00:08

Gorgeous! Was on my shortlist if I'd had a second daughter. Wonderful name as is clemency. Reminds me of handsome roman teenager I snogged too. Clemente. Ahhh.
Some people on here are only happy if you call your child Anna. Ignore 'em.Smile

Somerville · 06/07/2017 00:11

It's pronounced Clementeen though. Well, I know two, of very different ages, and they're both Clementeen's.
Does that solve the problem, or put you off the name?!
