Clementine. NN Clemmie. I love it. This will be last baby (4th) so Iast chance for this.

Trouble is, it has the same number of syllables as our last name. And the last syllables rhyme.

So think 'Clementine Hannodyne' (not our real surname but a close approximation).

So can I? Pretty please?

Honest opinions very much wanted. Be as brutal as you want.

The name is fine- it's the rhyme.

Clemency?

EllaHen · 05/07/2017 10:52

Please do - Clemmie is the most wonderful name. I love it.

Shannith · 05/07/2017 10:53

Actually, she is old school double barrelled as well, so kick me off Mumsnet now.

Never used it though, she is just Clemmie xxxxxx.

BertrandRussell · 05/07/2017 10:53

The thyme is the problem. And many children just are self conscious- you can't be sure that yours won't be.

HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 10:54

Clemency is beautiful. We may well change tack.

As for saying full name every day several times...this is not something I've experienced. But my other children go to a small school where there are no other children with same first name. Maybe that makes a difference.

Do it!

isupposeitsverynice · 05/07/2017 10:55

I like it. It'll be memorable!

HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 10:58

Shannith...your DD is lucky to have such a fab name!

Drybonesthatdream · 05/07/2017 10:58

I don't think the rhyming would make her self conscious - she'd be used to her name and can also choose to use her nn to avoid the rhyming. Clemmie is lovely and quaint on its own, clementine is lovely too.

Somerville · 05/07/2017 10:59

If in doubt, go for Clemency.

FruitTwist2017 · 05/07/2017 11:04

It's fine, but I just don't like the name.

CocoLoco87 · 05/07/2017 11:05

I automatically read Clementine as Clemen-teen. So maybe to avoid correcting people like me, Clemency would be better? Clemency rounds really pretty too. Congratulations!

MissTakesOurMaid · 05/07/2017 11:05

I wouldn't personally choose it because of the rhyming of the first name and surname - but it IS a gorgeous name and NN :) If I was you I'd go for Clemence or Clemency. Congratulations OP. :)

Shannith · 05/07/2017 11:10

No idea where it came from. Was not on the long list we made before she was born.

I was high as a kite and it just stuck as it seemed to suit her.

The first photo I sent to people was one of her next to a real clementine. Did I mention I was a bit out of it.

I was going for Charlotte, nn Lottie so not a million miles off.

Maybe decide before you are slightly delirious after 4 days of no sleep 😀

HelloFreedom · 05/07/2017 11:20

Clemence and Clemency both gorgeous. I think in the end I will avoid the rhyming...Bertrand is right that it could be seen as unkind.

Clemency a fab alternative though...why didn't I think of that sooner. DH keener on Clementine than Clemency though. He may need persuading!

Thanks for everyone's input. Been really useful!

I would go with Clementina, it's so pretty. She will be known as Clemmie. Just change the last letter, and all sounds good.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2017 17:48

Clementine Heseltine is fine. Don't like Clemence. Clemency is OK but prefer Clementine. Give her a middle name so she'll be Clementine Rose Bannantyne or Clemmie Bannantyne.

EnglandKeepMyBones · 05/07/2017 17:50

Change your last name?Grin

Mollie85 · 05/07/2017 18:03

So if your last name rhymed with clementine (like wine) could you pronounce it clementeeen?

Just an idea? Confused

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/07/2017 18:11

Clemency is fab. Much less clunky.

Mothervulva · 05/07/2017 18:14

My DH has a name and surname like that (rhyming ish). I don't think anyone ever teased him. I think it sounds a wonderful name.

Somerville · 05/07/2017 18:18

All day this thread has been vaguely at the back of my mind - because the rhyming surname my weird mind came up with for OP is Wolverine. I keep thinking 'Clementine Wolverine or Clemency Wolverine... which is better...?' Hmm Grin

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 05/07/2017 18:32

Oh baby names.....lol it's a follow your heart or your head sometimes, it's really unfair.

Love Clementine, (not teen ending though) however I really don't like Clemmie. It sounds like "phlegm-y" and makes me feel a bit sick.
Sorry.

As for surnames well, I do think that a long surname and a long first name can work together but it depends on what they are. I would steer clear of anything too alliterative though.

So if you pronounce it Clementine as I would, then if your surname is Heseltine, say, that must sounds ludicrous like a made up character. If, however your surname ended in a "teen" rather then"Tyne"(sic) sounds it's not quite so bad.

You do need to think about these things. We've had to veto many a name for our three as we have a short one syllable surname.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 05/07/2017 18:33

Ugh don't know where "lol" came from.
That was most certainly not intentional

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 05/07/2017 18:42
