Are there any girls names you like but wouldn't use for one reason or another? What kind of things put you off using a name?

I like Florence, but when David Cameron chose it for his daughter I knew I'd never use it

IntegritasAdSalutemVocat · 30/06/2017 10:55

Lila
Olive
Celia
Julia
Audrey

Lucy - doesn't work with my surname

Chloe - too popular

Ivy - doesn't work with my surname

Kate - already one in the family

Madeleine - dislike the nickname Maddie

Ophelia - too posh/too much teasing potential

Penelope - dislike the nickname Penny

Polly - doesn't work with my surname

Sarah - doesn't work with the surname

reuset · 30/06/2017 11:00

Antigone

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/06/2017 11:40

Arietty.

Jooni · 30/06/2017 11:54

Cleo, Hero, Oona and Katya/Kitty are too matchy with my other DCs' names.

Iona and any W- names don't work with the surname.

Lots of lovely names "taken" by close friends and family.

PodgeBod · 30/06/2017 11:57

Names that are taken:
Faith
Caitlin
Georgia
Cassie

Names dp doesn't like:
Susannah
Madeline
Emmeline
Hope
Rosalie

Lemondrop99 · 30/06/2017 13:41

Demelza
Esmeralda

Bit much to actually use in real life but I think they're awesome names

noodlebum · 30/06/2017 14:47

I'd still use them, but DP doesn't like them, or already taken by close family (male names are harder still!)

Astrid
Lily
Addison
Emma
Luca

Maverick66 · 30/06/2017 14:51

Norah
Imogen

cliffdiver · 30/06/2017 14:56

Madeline, because of Madeline McCann.

Penelope, because of the Kardashians.

Imogen, because of Imogen Thomas (I think a negative story broke about her when I was pregnant with one of the DDs).

RoseTico · 30/06/2017 14:57

Persephone

And Saorise, because my Irish roots are too thin!

ABCFamily · 30/06/2017 17:00

Hester and Demelza – I really like them, but I think they’re marmite names, so I’d be worried about my daughter hating her name.
Hermione – Too linked to Harry Potter, but would consider it for a middle name
Ophelia, Hazel, Iris, Clara, Jessica, Faith – Don’t work with our surname. (In fact Ophelia sounds downright rude!)
Imogen – My husband isn’t English, and thinks this name is ‘too weird’.
Tamsin – Too close to a close friend’s name
Lydia – Too matchy with my other daughter’s name

Named my DH didn't like so veto'd

Maggie
Sophia
Emmie

Names I wouldn't just because they are a bit too unusual and taken straight from game of thrones

Arya
Sansa

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/06/2017 18:10

Persephone. Too posh.

expatinscotland · 30/06/2017 18:14

Lavinia
Pearl
Abby/Abigail - too popular

Dixiestamp · 30/06/2017 23:55

Anastasia (my family would raise their eyebrows and say it was too 'dramatic' or something)
Kennedy - I always said if I'd been American I'd have called a girl this!!
Leia- love this but couldn't now we have a Luke in the family.

Dixiestamp · 30/06/2017 23:56

I'm not really a hyphen person but I always liked Emma-Elise; couldn't use it as these are two of my best friends' names and everyone would think it was after them (it's not- I just like the sound of them together!).

Buntysoven · 01/07/2017 02:01

Alice because my OH sings that bloody song when I mention it.

sparechange · 01/07/2017 02:09

Lucy, Emily - too many in the family
India - because Katie Hopkins
Scarlett & Savannah - because of our surname and because they don't have a nice shortening/nickname
Claudia - ExH and I had this picked out for the DD we didn't ever have

Jaxter · 01/07/2017 02:14

Sienna. Too many chav associations.

Joeybee · 01/07/2017 02:33

Raphaella - clashes with my surname, but otherwise a FANTASTIC name!

Brianna - LOVE this, however I'm a Joanna and DH is Bryan...so Brianna sounds like we are merging our two names, which is a bit tacky!

Mia (pronounced My-ah, not Mee-ah) I've always loved this name, but I hate it pronounced Mee-a, and that's what put me off it.

Generally what puts me off names is:

If there's ambiguity to how it should be spelt or pronounced
If it's too popular (e.g: LOVE Olivia, but it's way overused. Overused names tend to suddenly drop off in popularity and therefor become very dated).
If it reminds me of DH's exes, or characters on a show, or of old classmates or workmates.

WomanScorned · 01/07/2017 02:42

Angharad.
I love it, but too many people have described it as ugly or hard sounding.

MommaGee · 01/07/2017 03:20

Florence - DP vetoed even pre pregnancy!!

Persephone - I live in quite a working class Midlands area. Could just inagone it pronounced purse-a-phone

Lilleth - DP again

anniebambammie · 01/07/2017 14:16

Sadie- husband hates it!
Esther- I love it but I imagine it would be a life full of mispronunciations
