Are there any girls names you like but wouldn't use for one reason or another? What kind of things put you off using a name?

Indiana = too "out there" for DP
Harriet = too similar to a very close first cousin
Jean = close relative
Nancy = DP ex

If this one is a girl we'll be literally stuck.

RuggerHug · 01/07/2017 16:19

Lily and Olivia - love them both but every second girl seems to be named them.
Imelda and Sharon - adore the names but said with my accent are pure Roddy Doyle.

Muskey · 01/07/2017 16:32

Letty but it rhymes with our surname
Miivanwy doesn't go with surname
Niamh no one outside Ireland would pronounce it properly
Megan too many
Viola and Rosalind way too dramatic for my family
Owen/Eoin vetoed by dh because he went to school with a boy called Owen who always wore trainers to school rather than shoes Confused

mondler · 01/07/2017 18:04

Heather- have always loved it but it rhymes with married surname
Phoebe- DH hates it
Eleanor- clashes with surname

ShuttyTown · 01/07/2017 18:30

Allegra

manicinsomniac · 01/07/2017 20:37

So, so, many. I would applaud anybody who used any of these and think people should go with what they like and no care about others. But I'm a wuss and wouldn't use these names I love for the following reasons:

In the family:
Abigail, Natasha, Nicholas

Too 'out there':
Calypso, Cherry, Devon, Eriskay, Fallon, Indigo, Jerica, Journey, Kiki, Lyric, Mika, Nova, Phoenix, Raine, River, Rainbow, Red, Roka, Storm, Star, Silver, Story, Tallon, Zeryn

Tainted:
Isis, Jezebel

Too 'posh'
Araminta, Montgomery, Jocasta, Persephone, Rafferty, Rupert

Too American/'Modern':
Avery, Aubrey, Addison, Bailey, Carter, Dakota, Harley, Kennedy, Logan, Madison, Mackenzie, Preston, Quinn, Sutton, Spencer, Taylor,

Wrong Culture/Heritage:
Aoife, Amrita, Aaliyah, Anoushka, Aneirun, Eilidh, Farrah, Giselle, Hannelie, Karizma, Lachlan, Merrick, Niamh, Neriah, Petrova, Priya, Sorcha, Sacha, Tamika

emsyj37 · 01/07/2017 21:14

Cressida - we arent posh enough
Celestine - surname clash
Annabel - surname clash
Names we liked but didnt end up using:
Astrid
Claudia
Ramona
Rosalie

squoosh · 01/07/2017 21:41

Kasia

I'm not Polish.

squoosh · 01/07/2017 21:43

Angharad.
I love it, but too many people have described it as ugly or hard sounding.

I'm never quite sure how it's pronounced. Is it as it looks, ang-harrad?

user1469201971 · 01/07/2017 22:02

Antigone, Cassandra - tragic associations
Amoret, Zephryn - too unusual
Eirlys - I'm Welsh, but not Welsh-speaking; I don't want a lifetime of being told she's saying her own name wrong

Sorrel - hard to say with our surname

LexieLulu · 01/07/2017 22:17

I loved Amber, really wanted that name for my daughter then a family member used it.

My daughter has ginger hair too Sadshe would have been a perfect little amber

Thingymaboob · 01/07/2017 22:25

I love Ariel but DH hates it

HeteronormativeHaybales · 01/07/2017 22:34

I love Emily, I think it ticks all the boxes a name should, and it would go excellently with our surname, but for some reason I have not yet figured out it is massively, massively popular over here in Germany, and some parents spell it Emely Hmm. So it was straight off my list for dd.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 01/07/2017 22:35

The Germany thing put a lot of lovely names beyond use for us because I hated the pronunciation they would get here. Beatrice, Rosalind, Loveday, anything beginning with J.

JJ36TDR5 · 01/07/2017 22:44

Nova and Phoenix - OH doesn't like them.
Lily - too popular
Raven - 1st Daughter's middle name is Rae
Kari - risk that it would be pronounced like Carrie.
Arrow - loved it but now just makes me think of the TV show.
Melody - really dislike nn Mel

Rach5l · 01/07/2017 23:20

I love french names like Sabine & Celine but they'd sound a bit stupid on a child with a regional accent! My fave is actually Verdi Smile

Ceebs85 · 01/07/2017 23:25

Libby: sounds ridiculous with surname
Imogen: see above
Delilah: feels a bit 'try hard'

Rach5l · 01/07/2017 23:25

Karizma Grin love it!

Arielle or Ariella are beautiful & popular in Italy but again, might sound a bit weird with an accent

Shame Rafferty is seen as too posh, that's a good name. Raff, Raffy Grin

Also like Sasha or Sacha but prob wouldn't use

squoosh · 01/07/2017 23:26

Rafferty definitely isn't posh! No more than any other Irish surname Grin

Rach5l · 01/07/2017 23:27

Libby just sounds ridiculous on its own. Sounds like someone with a speech impediment saying livvy wrong

WildCherryBlossom · 01/07/2017 23:30

I secretly really love the name Delilah. But the Tom Jones song..... I could't do that to a child. But I'll probably call a pet Delilah one day.

annandale · 01/07/2017 23:32

Candida. Beautiful name and i knew a lovely girl called it years ago, but too much yeast.

Gaye.
Rhiannon, Seren - not Welsh enough.
Aoife, Roisin, Loinnir - not Irish enough.

bluechameleon · 01/07/2017 23:56

Philippa, Penelope - surname starts with P and these names are just too much.
Arabella, Annabel - already 2 As in the family so don't want another.

TabbyTurmoil · 03/07/2017 04:00

DP vetoed : Ursula, Harriet, Stella, Martha, Audrey, Thora, Sorrel, Francesca and heaps more
Too unusual: Morven, Cicely
Too well-used: Olive,
Used by friends or family: Ellen, Lucy

I'd have loved an Ursula after Life After Life (currently in the process of naming a tiny DD and feeling sad about letting that one go).

Calphurnia · 03/07/2017 04:18

Aspen. Because "Ass Pen"

Lavender. Because the nn would be toilet based
