Choosing between two names for a boy

We have many reasons for loving both of these names, but don't want to affect your reactions! Any thoughts, preferences, or side-effects/coincidences we haven't thought of, for a boy:

Alexander
Maximilian

Obvs they'll often be Alex or Max, which are fine. Thanks for any help!

Maximilian

I like both but Alexander is too popular. I like Max, Maxim and Maximilian. I thought Xander was a nice short form for Alexander but I've heard of a few Zanders and the novelty has worn off.
A friend has a DGS called Max (Maximilian) so it gets a big thumbs up from me.
Alex to me is a girl's name.

I like Alexander more than Maximilian. But I like Max more than Alex, so since that's what they'll be called by most people, I'd go with that.

WithCheesePlease · 10/06/2017 14:29

I think both are nice as short names, maybe slightly prefer Alex. However for the full versions, I think Alexander is a million times better, sorry just don't like Maximilian at all- hope I'm not offending you by that

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 10/06/2017 14:32

Max(imilian) is my preference.

Teddy6767 · 10/06/2017 14:32

Alexander

grufallosfriend · 10/06/2017 14:36

Both Alex and Max are very popular. If that doesn't bother you, I'd choose Alex.

leghoul · 10/06/2017 14:38

Alexander

wobblywonderwoman · 10/06/2017 14:49

I like Alex and Max but not so keen on Maximilian though I know one and it suits him.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2017 14:50

I much prefer Alexander.

Allthebestnamesareused · 10/06/2017 14:51

My oldest is Alex (Alexander) and my youngest is Max (but just Max, not short for anything) so I'm no bloody use to you at all!

squoosh · 10/06/2017 14:52

I like both Alex and Max so I'm afraid I cannot assist you with this one 😀

harderandharder2breathe · 10/06/2017 14:54

Alexander hands down for me

whatajobbeingsamumis30 · 10/06/2017 14:59

My husband is Maxime - so I prefer Max but not personally a fan of Maximilian but you know what, my opinion doesn't matter - wait till baby is born, you will know what is right! Good luck!

whatajobbeingsamumis30 · 10/06/2017 15:00

Edit: good to have a couple up your sleeve in case!

29Palms · 10/06/2017 15:09

Alex to me is a girl's name

Another shortening of Alexander is Alec, which is less commonly heard than Alex, and is (almost) always a boy's name.

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2017 15:12

I love Alec, but people will usually say Alex (done it myself)

IWillCrushYouLikeABug · 10/06/2017 15:15

I like them both, I'd use them both

Shortened version first name
Long name middle name.

EllaHen · 10/06/2017 15:16

I love both Alex and Max.

Prefer Alexander to Maximilian.

Oh, and in Scotland lots of Alex's routinely get Alec.

MurrayMoo · 10/06/2017 15:59

Maximilian every time!

Jooni · 10/06/2017 16:15

Ooh, Maximilian!

NotYoda · 10/06/2017 16:19

Alex

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/06/2017 16:43

celtiethree · 10/06/2017 16:44
