Unusual Name Ideas?

pravkija · 10/06/2017 10:45

I really like unusual names, I was wondering what other people considered unusual and what unusual names they liked. Were there any names that you wished you used or wanted to at the time, but didn't because you feared it was too 'out there'?

I'm looking for both boys and girls names, thanks if you can help.

What are the unusual names that you like?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/06/2017 12:50

I like Hudson and Oakely.
How about Wren and Ebony.

Wren is awful IMO. Not the bird troglodytes troglodytes, but as a name.
Bound to be nn'd as Rennie - reminds me of indigestion.

chickpe · 10/06/2017 12:56

We were thinking of Aster for a girl, but our bean is a boy, so he'll be named Cedar instead. I know my cousin really likes Allegra.

It depends on how unusual you want. Personally I really like many outside the top 250 or so. Classic but not overused or trendy.

Broadly speaking, and there are exceptions, I don't like:
made-up or you-neek spelling names
names that are usually surnames
names that are things or nouns (eg Wren)

I like names that have some sort of history or tradition behind them, but that have fallen out of fashion, been forgotten or are just a bit obscure.

CowParsleyNettle · 10/06/2017 19:14

Corbyn?

bridgetreilly · 10/06/2017 20:13

Ebony is truly awful. Racist overtones whether you are black or white. Please don't go there.

LittleLostRoeDeer · 10/06/2017 23:19

Our baby name lists have included the following over the years:
Waverley
Fenella
Astrid

Erland
Woody
Dexter

I can't put my daughter's actual name as I'm pretty sure she's the only kid called it and it'll out me! Trying for number 3 at the moment and can't decide whether we'll go so unusual again or not. Something to consider, in my experience from having used an unusual name, it can be a pain. I end up repeating it, spelling it out, and agreeing over and over that yes it is unusual...

SuperBeagle · 10/06/2017 23:25

Ebony is an awful name. Racist connotations, and often considered "chavvy" or low class.

Composteleana · 10/06/2017 23:34

Currently teaching a little Delilah, which I absolutely love.

Just read a book featuring a Talitha which I also like.

Also like Celia/Cece

I like Vincent for a boy, also Enzo, though doubt I would use either. Is Flynn unusual or are there lots of those now? I like that too.

OP the most unusual name I've come across on a girl might be Merle, for a boy perhaps Malacky.

viques · 11/06/2017 01:18

I think Lentil is quite sweet, if they were twins you could have Lentil and Bean.

LorLorr2 · 11/06/2017 01:19

I also had a friend called Beau and our other friends were jealous as they thought it was a cool name Grin

BandeauSally · 11/06/2017 01:24

Lentil and bean! Grin brilliant!

I know a Baby Bo.

29Palms · 11/06/2017 01:30

Malacky isn't a name, it's a spelling mistake.
