Rudy as a girls name?

Hi! We are having a baby girl, due in September. We're really struggling with thinking of some potential names for her. DP hates 'flowery' names so that wipes out quite a few!

The only two we can vaguely agree on are:
Rudy Sophia
Lyra Rose

Any thoughts? I've liked Rudy all along, but it has been met with skepticism from others.

Lyra is the better choice I think. Is Rudy an actual girl's name in your cultural background? I would not associate it with a girl -isn't is usually a shortening of Rudolf?

Sophronia · 03/06/2017 08:32

I only like it for a boy, sorry. How about Romy, Ruby, Runa or Ruth instead?

I would choose Lyra Sophia from your names.

NataliaOsipova · 03/06/2017 08:34

Agree that Rudy is short for Rudolph/Rudolf.....so be prepared for people to think she's Ruby.

Lyra is the main character in the Philip Pullman "Dark Materials" series. Nothing hugely negative in that, but, again, I would assume that's why you chose it.

Rudy is a boys name, and she would spend her whole life saying "no not Ruby".

My dad has a middle name that is very similar to another more common name and he hates it when people get it wrong and thats just his middle name.

Popkids · 03/06/2017 08:41

The youngest daughter in The Cosby Show was called Rudy and she was pretty cool. I think it sounds nice. Not a fan of Lyra I'm afraid.

ScarletSienna · 03/06/2017 08:42

I like Lyra Rose. Only ever met one Lyra yet it's familiar.

Rudy is not unisex IMO and just sounds like you're saying Rudey so I wouldn't use it for a boy either.

harderandharder2breathe · 03/06/2017 10:10

Lyra

Rudy will be forever either assumed to be a boy or mistaken for Ruby

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/06/2017 10:17

Lyra Rose, lovely.

Floellabella · 03/06/2017 10:23

Rudy is a boys name I'm afraid and agree you would be setting you and her up for a lifetime of "no, not Ruby" which would be terribly tedious. Lyra is a good name, personally think it goes better with Sophia because the R is a bit repetitive with Rose x

ItsAYesFromMe · 03/06/2017 10:26

I know a girl called Rudy. She's early twenties.

Lemondrop99 · 03/06/2017 10:37

I love Lyra

I think a female Rudy would get tired of people mistaking her for Ruby

UsaNayme · 03/06/2017 10:56

What about Jody, Joni or Judy?

EspressoPatronum · 03/06/2017 11:13

Friends of ours have a little girl called Rudi. Yes it's unusual, but it suits her! If that's the name you like, go for it.

daisypond · 03/06/2017 11:58

Rudy's a boy's name, to me.
Trudie/Ermintrude/Gertrude?
Rita/Margarita?
Ruth? Rumer? Sadie?

SuperBeagle · 03/06/2017 20:12

Lyra.

Rudy is a boys name, no two ways about it. She'll get called Ruby mistakenly her whole life.

simonthedog · 03/06/2017 20:15

I think of Rudy Huxtable from the Cosby Show too, but I really like it.

KeepCalm · 03/06/2017 20:16

Dd2 was almost, ALMOST Rudy. Down to the last two names 2wks after she was born and it was only my mother' abhorrent dislike of the other choice that made us use it.

To be fair she didn't like either name but she annoyed us and DH & I just gave up.

I still love it. If you love it use it and sod others opinions!

simonthedog · 03/06/2017 20:16

Wasn't Smithy's sister in Gavin and Stacey called Rudy too?

lilydaisyrose · 03/06/2017 20:18

Is Rose not a flowery name?

OnlyEatsToast · 03/06/2017 20:20

I work with a Roudie (female) and adore her name. DS goes to nursery with a Rudi (male) - although not sure of exact spelling. Love the name! It works for both of them

BertrandRussell · 03/06/2017 20:21

Rudy is a boy's name. Why would you give a girl a boy's name?

KeepCalm · 03/06/2017 20:22

Oh and you'll get the 'why give a girl a boys name brigade' marching all over your post soon too....... just warning you!

redheadbarmaid · 03/06/2017 20:25

I know a female Rudy, about 30.
Always thought it was a lovely and cool name

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 03/06/2017 20:32

I love Rudy!

It's very cool.

BertrandRussell · 03/06/2017 20:33

It will be fine to give girls boy's names-when it is equally fine to give boys girl's names.
