Thoughts on boy's names please - Arnold or Wilfred?

Hi all, our second son is due in a month and we are still struggling with names - I found people's thoughts on here really helpful last time around so thought I'd try again. So, what do you think about Arnold (Arnie to his friends) or Wilfred (Wilf)? Both would have middle name James. I suspect they are both a bit marmite but I'd welcome your honest reactions! We're after something old English and not too well-used but also not so obscure that we feel silly shouting it across the park! Thanks in advance Smile

I'm voting for Wilfred 👍

Reow · 24/05/2017 16:13

Love both of these!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 24/05/2017 17:16

I don't think you can get a wetter name than Wilfred to be honest. Makes me think of a sad, weak, wilting weed.
Yes, Frank is good. Franklin. Francis quite wet too, but it's OK.
Felix is a fabulous name, you have gone in such a different direction this time!!!

Walter nn Walt OP?

ohhbother · 24/05/2017 19:41

I like both Blush

RookieMama · 24/05/2017 22:17

Thanks everyone for your opinions. ShmooMooBoo I love the tale of your 'friend' Arnold - not sure I'll ever think of the name the same way again! We like Wilbur and Arlo too. Ralph hadn't crossed my mind - reminds me of the Judy Blume book Forever but I still like it - husband not convinced! Have also got Errol (Roly) and Eric on our list - any views welcomed!

I love Wilfred (it's my son's middle name), and I like Ralph too. I'm not as keen on Arnold though.

Other names on my list included: Dominic, Edwin, Guy, Ivo, Nathaniel and Victor.

ButTheBearSnoredOn · 24/05/2017 22:45

I like arlo. And Arthur (in case you missed it the first time I suggested it Grin)

I can't get past the fact that I went to school with the world's wimpiest, uncoolest Wilfred ever and it's ruined the name for me.

RookieMama · 24/05/2017 22:48

Love Arthur but his cousin has already snapped it up sadly!

Don't like either, but if pushed would choose Wilfred, but much prefer Wilf.

Arlo reminds me of my friends dog and Roly will always remind me of the fat lad off Grange Hill.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/05/2017 22:55

I like Errol but not roly.

I know a 1 year old Arlo. Ezra has a similar feel but both are climbing the popularity charts of that bothers you

Rafe is another suggestion and Sylvester nn silver

My vote is still for Wilbur though

Chatelherault · 25/05/2017 00:41

I dislike them both, sorry.

Nicky2468 · 25/05/2017 01:26

Wilf (Wilfred) definitely. I know a lovely 3 year old called that. Not keen on Arnold.

RiseToday · 25/05/2017 08:56

I met a Wilburt the other day.

Seriously Confused

TheNaze73 · 25/05/2017 09:02

I don't like Arnold. Makes me think of Diff'rent Strokes. That's one for the kidz Grin

Wilf is a great name

TestTubeTeen · 25/05/2017 09:05

Wilfred is great, as a full name, and offers Will, Wilf or Fred / Freddie as nicknames.

Arnold sounds very nasal.

TestTubeTeen · 25/05/2017 09:07

Wilbur also good.

llangennith · 25/05/2017 09:20

Neither. They're awful.

Smellybluecheese · 25/05/2017 09:33

If you are looking for something that's not too popular I'd go for Arnold. I know three Wilfreds under 2. Known as Wilfred, Wilfie and Freddie respectively.

ganda1 · 25/05/2017 19:17

My nephew is called wilfred and I love it!!!

squoosh · 26/05/2017 15:22

If I had to pick one from Wilfred and Arnold I'd go for Arnold. But I much, MUCH prefer Frank.

MUCH.

PhuntSox · 26/05/2017 20:22

I always think Jasper goes well with Felix.

James would be a lovely first name, not too popular but classic. Jim is cool.
