Thoughts on boy's names please - Arnold or Wilfred?

Hi all, our second son is due in a month and we are still struggling with names - I found people's thoughts on here really helpful last time around so thought I'd try again. So, what do you think about Arnold (Arnie to his friends) or Wilfred (Wilf)? Both would have middle name James. I suspect they are both a bit marmite but I'd welcome your honest reactions! We're after something old English and not too well-used but also not so obscure that we feel silly shouting it across the park! Thanks in advance Smile

They're both really wet. Wilf is particularly awful.

MaroonPencil · 24/05/2017 08:29

Can't be arsed not added

Rockaby · 24/05/2017 08:55

Another vote for Wilfred!

Rockaby · 24/05/2017 08:56

I know an Aaron with nn Arnie fwiw. I quite like that.

Epipgab · 24/05/2017 09:09

Both fine, but I prefer Wilfred, nickname Will or Freddie.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/05/2017 09:21

I really like Wilfred. He can always go by Freddie if he wants something more mainstream (remember you can't fully control nicknames)

Not a fan of Arnold, it just sounds dorky. Arnie is ok.

Can I suggest Wilbur. I think it fits your style and I think it's a lovely name

ShuttyTown · 24/05/2017 09:26

Both hideous

RookieMama · 24/05/2017 09:33

Thanks everyone for your views, I'm surprised that Wilf is getting more love than Arnold so that's why it's useful to ask the question! Wilbur is also on our list but fewer options for him to choose a shortening in the future which is what I like about Wilfred (will / wilf/ Freddie etc). We also have Frank on the list (suspect I'm asking for trouble putting that one out there..Grin) and Louis (diverging from the English thing), the latter seems to be much more popular than our other choices. Our first son is Felix if that helps. Thanks all

Louis. Definitely Louis.

chainedtothedesk · 24/05/2017 09:50

Wilf is nice. Only one I know is almost 90 so little chance of him having to 'share' his name with a dozen classmates.

I like unusual names. Go for it.

almosttherenow · 24/05/2017 09:58

Imo Louis goes much better with your first sons name. I don't quite understand how you get from Felix (really nice name by the way) to Wilfred?!

I know a couple of babies that have been called Wilfred lately and people haven't been keen on it at all. The nn Will or Freddie is good but 'Wilf'- no!

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/05/2017 10:01

Please not another Louis!

I'm not a massive fan of Frank though Franklin and Francis are nice as full names.

How about Otis or Alfred ( could have Alf, Al, Alfie, Fred, Freddie)

MaroonPencil · 24/05/2017 11:07

I like Frank, Frankie, Franklin...have you thought about Bertram/ Bertie?

goldenrachita · 24/05/2017 12:21

I like Arnie. It's really cute and it's different. Arnold is a strong name. I don't like the 'fred' part of Wilfred much myself. Wilf is becoming quite a popular and trendy name so Arnie stands out more and he's less likely to meet other small Wilfs. I'm not surprised everyone prefers Wilf- William is hugely popular and it's not really that different.

goldenrachita · 24/05/2017 12:22

Sorry I meant he's MORE likely to meet little Wilfs than ever meet an Arnie.

harderandharder2breathe · 24/05/2017 12:38

Wilfred

ShmooBooMoo · 24/05/2017 12:42

Wilfred shortened to Wilf, although I think Ralph is nicer.
Arnold...a definite no from me... I have a haemorrhoid named Arnold. Why is he called Arnold? It's the nearest name to Arsehole I could think of. I sometimes nickname him Arnie because he goes away but always comes back! Grin

ShmooBooMoo · 24/05/2017 12:45

I heard Arlo for a boy the other day and thought that was nice. Just looked it up and here's what it says:
Arlo (pronounced AR-loh) is a given name for males. There are several origins of the name. From Old English, it is believed to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon here 'army, fortified, troops; war-' and hlaw 'mound, cairn, hill,' thereby meaning 'fortified hill.' ... In Spanish, its meaning is 'barberry tree.'
Arlo James has a nice ring to it Smile

ShmooBooMoo · 24/05/2017 12:46

I love 17caterpillars suggestion of Wilbur too! Love that name! love that it can be shortened to Will. Wilbur James goes too!

SprinkleOfInsanity · 24/05/2017 13:23

What about Sidney or, Stanley.

'Felix and Sidney' has a particularly nice sound to it.

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2017 13:43

I like both. Wait until he turns up and then decide?

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 24/05/2017 14:09

Not Louis.

I like Frank, Arlo and Arnold.

oohloolala · 24/05/2017 14:36

Wilbur is nice, I don't mind Wilfred either but really don't like Arnold! I prefer Frankie to Frank and agree Louis is overused. Do you like Alfred?

Rockaby · 24/05/2017 16:02

Felix and Wilbur!

Sittinonthefloor · 24/05/2017 16:09

Felix is a great name! Arnold = dreadful! Wilfred = try-hard retro hipster name, and it's not a nice sound either! Louis and felix sound good together!
