OP,

Are you pronouncing Violetta as "Vi-o-LETT-a", or "Vee-o-LETT-a" ?

Just checking: I fell for the 2nd pronunciation (Italian), on having "The Small Miracle" (Paul Gallico) read to me as a child. Beautiful, poignant story.

Hadn't heard of Lilias before, but it's very pretty. Different. And I like the Scottish connection.

Big fan of interesting/ less usual names, but I think you'd need to be a feisty, very confident kid to handle "Juniper".
Yet PPs mentioned it's becoming popular, so perhaps I'm wrong there?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 10/05/2017 17:05

I think they're all awful apart from Jane, sorry!

CoralieConfused · 10/05/2017 17:05

Alas, he thinks it sounds silly

Mothervulva · 10/05/2017 17:13

I love Hebe.
Hebe Constance Jane.

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 10/05/2017 17:15

So, now that I remembered to refresh the pages... Blush

Really like Marina and Estella from Mini's alternatives, too sorry not helpful

CoralieConfused · 10/05/2017 17:18

I'd love Marina as a middle name - it has family significance

Lilias is pretty, but unfortunately has associations with, er, feminine sanitary products.

Jane is the only one from the original list that I like, but could do with a more spectacular name to go with it.

Mercy is a virtue name that I don't often come across.

Marina is lovely.

CoralieConfused · 10/05/2017 17:37

I just don't get the Lilets connection either, so again it doesn't bother me

29Palms · 10/05/2017 17:42

There used to be a brand of sanitary towel called Lilia, as well as the tampons. You obviously don't remember it, but lots of people will.

CoralieConfused · 10/05/2017 17:44

Ah well. I actually don't care tbh, it doesn't relate to Lilias at all for me

I really am worried by the xenophobia shown on some of these pages towards names from non-English cultures.

Lilias is a Scottish version of 'Lilian', which is a name that's been known since the 16th century, if not before. It's a derivative of 'Elizabeth', not of the flower name 'Lily'.

It is pronounced 'Leehl-eeh-uss'.

It has (of course) nothing to do with Lilets. The popular English flower name Lily/Lili is much closer to that, but is still very popular. Strange how none of the critics of Lilias mention that ...

SuperFlyHigh · 10/05/2017 17:56

Marina is lovely, as a first name. Mirabelle is nice from someone else's list.

Why not call her June rather than Juniper (it'll get shortened anyway) friends of mine had a DD last week in May and called her June.

SuperFlyHigh · 10/05/2017 18:00

29 out of all the virtue names Mercy is awful and no wonder it's not often come across (unless you're a bible basher)!

Agreed also in a way re child not turning out like the virtue name.

Sorrel is lovely. I know a tree/plant based name that's really pretty and unusual but gone out of my head will post if I think of it.

29Palms · 10/05/2017 18:03

Mercy isn't "awful", it's just not to your taste.
I don't like Sorrel, but I wouldn't call it awful.

Ohyesiam · 10/05/2017 18:09

Jane, that's all.

29Palms · 10/05/2017 18:12

I'm aware of the origins of Lilias, as it is a name that occurs a few times in my father's family. I like it better than Lily. I think it's going a bit far to accuse people of xenophobia.

It's surely reasonable to draw attention to possible associations that names might have? People are free to disregard them if they wish.

ILookedintheWater · 10/05/2017 18:17

Jane. Best on the list, and very underused.

ILookedintheWater · 10/05/2017 18:20

You said your surname begins with B, not Berry is it?

SuperFlyHigh · 10/05/2017 18:24

29 Mercy to me (considering most people know the meaning) is awful...

But that's my opinion.

HoratioNightboy · 10/05/2017 18:24

I think we have the same taste OP, other than Evangeline! Love Juniper and January in particular. I'm also a big fan of Lilias and have many in my family tree. Pronuciation isn't straightforward though. I see that flora has given one above, but the ones I have come across were pronounced Leeliss. Standard Scots pronunciation and historical spellings would tend to support this, e.g Lillas, Lilless.

I knew one old lady who pronounced her name along the lines of Tobias, and the modern pronunciation appears to be Lily-iss. I'd just go for Juniper myself! Wink

CarbonMint · 10/05/2017 18:24

Just throwing this in here...Juniper Tanith

CoralieConfused · 10/05/2017 18:27

Haha no, surname is not Berry!
