Like posh names, here's my list, what else should make the cut?

Hi all,

Baby due in 6 weeks and we are stuck for names. I think it's compounded by the fact that ds1 didn't look anything like his planned name and ended up with something way down our short list - suits him perfectly though! He is a Freddie. We have a short, strong surname so first/middle names can afford to be a bit longer but anyway, here is my short list so far. What am I missing and do you have any favourites or good combinations? We'd like 2 middle names.

Octavia (Tavi/Occy)
Ottilie (Ottie)
Genevieve (Evie)
Beatrix (Bea)
Xanthe
Violet

Archibald (Archie)
Theodore (Theo)
Bertram (Bertie)
Ludo
Barnaby
Henry
Sebastian
Milo

What makes the royal family so 'posh'?

silkpyjamasallday · 03/05/2017 15:30

All the 'posh' people I know don't go by their actual names but some sort of nickname that bears no resemblance to the original name at all. Shrimp is one example, actually called Olivia.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 03/05/2017 15:40

Not sure about posh (I am not even a single bit posh,) but I think:

Freddie and Theo
Freddie and Henry

Or

Freddie and Beatrix
Freddie and Evie

Go really well together.

AvaCrowder2 · 03/05/2017 16:27

The poshest people I know like pps Stinky, Nits and Shrimp are called Hog and Mooey. Not short for anything, proper nicknames.

I think Prince William is known as Wombat.

Mrsknackered · 03/05/2017 16:36

Pipilang I wouldn't name my children what I suggested, but OP asked for posh names! They are some of the names of 'posh' children.
Missed out Arabella though, that is really quite up there.

Mrsknackered · 03/05/2017 16:37

Yy to previous poster I know a 'prawn' who is really Hector Ignatius Confused

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 03/05/2017 16:50

Thinking of the "poshest" folk I know, their names are;

Horatio
Nigel
Graham
David
Edmund
Nicholas

Rosemary
Jennifer
Lyneth
Fiona
Amanda

I agree that a name can only be "posh" in context. So many names transcend all social levels (Harry for example). It's the person carrying the name that makes it "posh" or otherwise.

If you want a classic but not overly common (as in popular) name then I like;

Violet
Genevieve

Sebastian
Theodore (although I prefer just Theo)

pipilangstrumpf · 03/05/2017 16:51

Mrsknackerd, well I really like them (apart from Gertrude) and i don't think I'm posh!

Willow2017 · 03/05/2017 17:09

I know people related to the queen, can't get much 'posher' and traditional than that but they all have normal names like Ian. Sorry!
😀

Willow2017 · 03/05/2017 17:11

Would you really call a child 'occy'? No just no.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/05/2017 17:17

I like

Octavia though neither nickname
Ottilie
Beatrix - though know 3 under 1s
Xanthe
Violet - but would see this as posh

How about...
Thomasina
Ottoline
Alberta
Jocelyn
Eugenie
Jemima

From your boys

I love Bertram could be Bertie or Bram
Theodore (prefer nn Ted)
Barnaby
Henry
Sebastian - though know 3 under 1

Ludo sounds like a dog name

How about?
Rupert
Keir
Alfred
Seth - has came feel as Miles to me
Hugh
Ralph

Garlicansapphire · 03/05/2017 17:28

I think some of them are nice-ish but I'm not sure I'd want them to sound too nobby. Would it fit with your environment/surname?

I like:
Beatrice
Alice
Elodie
Lily
Aurelia
Madeleine
Aurora
Leah
Dulcie
and lots of french/celtic names.... But not many of your poshie ones

As for the boys names I only like Theo out of your list.

TheExuberant1 · 03/05/2017 18:45

I love sebastian/Seb
Other names
Monty
Humphrey
Hugo

sugarplumfairy28 · 03/05/2017 18:45

I love Ottilie, my DD. Names also on our list were

Clementine
Adelaide
Vivienne

For boys I really like
Archie
Kaspar
Felix

pipilangstrumpf · 03/05/2017 21:42

I know people related to the queen, can't get much 'posher' and traditional than that but they all have normal names like Ian. Sorry!

But just because they choose 'normal' names (whatever that means), doesn't mean the op or others to love and use 'posh' names.

What if some of us just like the names?

pipilangstrumpf · 03/05/2017 21:43

And don't like Ian? Smile

Willow2017 · 04/05/2017 00:26

But just because they choose 'normal' names (whatever that means), doesn't mean the op or others to love and use 'posh' names.
Eh?

I never said they had to like any name. Just showing that any name could be considered 'traditional' or 'posh' depending on how you defined 'traditional' or 'posh'. Smile

QuietNameChange · 04/05/2017 00:38

Willow
I do actually wonder how the OP defines posh? The word 'posh' makes me personally think of posh spice/Victoria and fake tanned people... Not particularly classy (and most likely not what the OP is looking for...).

ohgoshIdontknow · 04/05/2017 00:56

Bertie is a ridiculous name.

I know what you mean by posh OP. Everyone picking holes is being purposefully obtuse.

Barnaby is another silly name like Bertie. I'd go for something traditional like John tbh.

WanderingTrolley1 · 04/05/2017 00:59

"Posh" and true class are entirely different.

Buntysoven · 04/05/2017 01:05

I think Vanessa Clarissa Julian and Peregrine fit your criteria but only like the girls names.

pipilangstrumpf · 04/05/2017 08:21

Willow, what I meant is: Just because the Royal family choose s name like Ian doesn't make the name Ian 'posh'. Sorry I didn't write that clearly yesterday.

In other words, maybe 'posh' is the wrong description for the type of name the op is looking for. Seems it's more a classic elegant smart kind of name?

pipilangstrumpf · 04/05/2017 08:27

Sorry, a name

LarrytheCucumber · 04/05/2017 08:43

You clearly don't watch Neighbours or you wouldn't have Xanthe on your list OPWink

Willow2017 · 04/05/2017 10:09

To be fair the people I know who are related to the queen are the least 'posh' people I know Smile very down to earth, no airs or graces. Definately a case of class doesnt mean 'posh'.

Not criticising the ops choices, personally I wouldnt chose many of them myself but its up to her what she calls her kids as long as its not too ridiculous or she is chosing them to 'make a statement' of some kind.

Pip are you insinuating I am not 'posh'? My dads name is Ian too Grin I am gutted Sad
