Like posh names, here's my list, what else should make the cut?

Hi all,

Baby due in 6 weeks and we are stuck for names. I think it's compounded by the fact that ds1 didn't look anything like his planned name and ended up with something way down our short list - suits him perfectly though! He is a Freddie. We have a short, strong surname so first/middle names can afford to be a bit longer but anyway, here is my short list so far. What am I missing and do you have any favourites or good combinations? We'd like 2 middle names.

Octavia (Tavi/Occy)
Ottilie (Ottie)
Genevieve (Evie)
Beatrix (Bea)
Xanthe
Violet

Archibald (Archie)
Theodore (Theo)
Bertram (Bertie)
Ludo
Barnaby
Henry
Sebastian
Milo

The poshest people I know (and I mean upper class, mates with the queen type people) have very 'normal' names. Simon is the name of the guy. Why do you consider the names you've listed 'posh'?

TealStar · 02/05/2017 20:13

The only ones I would consider are Violet, Genevieve, Theo and Henry. Many of the others I find a bit toe curling, sorry!

TealStar · 02/05/2017 20:14

Sebastian's OK

Violet, Sebastian, Henry and Theo are pretty run of the mill names now, IME. Definitely not distinguishingly "posh".

Having said that, the poshest person I know is called Philip; but also Peregrine, Alexander, Benedict, Timothy and Rupert in my vaguely posh friends and acquaintances. Their wives, daughters, sisters etc are Judith, Camila, Corinne, Celia, Julia and Moira.

GuinessPunch · 02/05/2017 20:19

Bertie is absolutely rid on anyone over 5.

ZilphasHatpin · 02/05/2017 20:19

Youve spelt pretentious wrong OP.

DramaInPyjamas · 02/05/2017 20:20

All I have in my head is now is 'Occy Occy Occy Oi Oi O'i darts style chant - not very posh Grin

BikeRunSki · 02/05/2017 20:21

Surely the natural abbreviation of Octavia would be "Tavia"

DramaInPyjamas · 02/05/2017 20:22

I love the names Milo & Violet though

BikeRunSki · 02/05/2017 20:24

Tatler posh baby names

SuperBeagle · 02/05/2017 20:24

Occy is so grim. Octavia in full is not much better.

All of the 'posh' people I know have less pretentious names. James, Margaret, Elizabeth, John etc.

Thank you to those that made fab suggestions. Unfortunately plenty that have been mentioned we can't use due to our huge families having got there first. This will be great grandchild number 19 on my side, 16 on DH's. I think we have something like over 100 family between us!

Sorry to those I have clearly offended by mentioning 'posh'. I just meant to help point in a direction such as 'nature' or 'traditional' or 'old fashioned' etc

My DS1's name is on your list. We're not posh. It's a lovely name though Grin

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 02/05/2017 21:03

Why would you want a posh name? (genuinely curious)

Rach6l · 02/05/2017 21:04

Bertram Grin sorry
Xanthe is definitely not posh btw
If you want proper posh look at royal names

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/05/2017 21:11

That Tatler list is hilarious. HUM? Who on earth looks at a baby girl and thinks "I'll call you Hum"? ShockGrin

Shemozzle · 02/05/2017 21:16

I'm not sure why everyone is being so pedantic about 'posh' it's clear what you mean. I always say I like pretentious names and I'm very much working class. Here's some of my favourites, including those I've used.

Girls:
Tabitha
Tess
Antigone (Tiggy)
Cassiopeia (Cassie)
Persephone (Percy)
Clementine (Clem)
Vivienne (Vivi)

Boys:
Rufus
Rafferty (Raffy)
Thaddeus
Wulfric (Wolfie)
Cassius
Caspar
I do have to reiterate what others have said that Violet, Theo, Seb, Archie and Henry are so commonly used now that they'd be under popular rather than posh category. Check darkgreener names website for recent trends.

User99573864 · 02/05/2017 21:22

Theo and Archie?!

A name is only 'posh' [boak] in context.

If they're on Jeremy Kyle they're not posh, if they're on their private country estate, they are!

I bet there are lots of Williams and Harry's that are right oiks!
