What inspired your DC names?

First of all, I'm completely "out" on here, so really haven't got an issue with posting my kid's names.

Everyone I know seems to have a beautifully romantic story about the naming of their DC- they saw a rock and just knew that was the name of their baby, the place they were conceived, they were named after someone in the family, etc.

I've loved the name Korbyn since I was 17, and saw a movie called Teen Agent- the cheeky little shit hero in the movie was Michael Corbyn.

And Karyn is named after Whoopi Goldberg (real name) as she was my hero growing up.

I'd love to hear others' inspirations!

My son was named after my grandfather who died before I was born - first name, and DH's grandfather - middle name.

QuietNameChange · 01/05/2017 10:52

About 5 months of lists, several online profiles and baby name books. Looks like it will be similar for DC2.

And then just... the name that "felt" right when we saw DD (we had picked out 3 names to choose from).

Seeing as our names have to work in various languages (at least 3, preferably 5....)many of the names I've "always liked" were suddenly
not possible because they sound bad in English/DH couldn't pronounce it etc.... Plus, we really looked into the meaning of the name.

If it sounded good in the necessary lnaguages, had a nice meaning, wasn't very religious or overly popular... That were our criteria.

Travelling! And a Saint's name (there's almost as many of this name in the Uffizi as there are Madonnas!)

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 10:58

I knew I would always call a baby Korbyn- I just struggled with the middle name. I WANTED either Korbyn Albus or Korbyn Severus. Fought with DH for months 😂.

Then he became a Michael Flatley wannabe...ouch! The Beatles were playing full blast one night. "Hey Jude" came on and he stopped kicking. Korbyn Jude it was! So I guess I do have a "romantic story" surrounding his name after all.

DS1 - my grannie misheard and thought I'd named him for her Dad, so I did and just use the nickname for him, and his middle name is my dad's name. A very traditional Scottish name.

DD - named after DPs late mum, my mum and my late grannie. 3 very traditional names, she uses the nickname of her first name day to day though.

DS2 - DPs pick, Irish, and I hated it (we live in an area where sectarianism is rife unfortunately) until I saw his face on the scan and it just fitted him perfectly. Middle names are after his dad and grandad (same name) and my best friend who died while I was pregnant so we used the masculine form of her name as a middle name.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 11:03

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gave my DC's more than one middle name. We very rarely use them anyway- just the first middle name iyswim?

QuietNameChange · 01/05/2017 11:11

Same :) DD also has 2 middle names...

We only ever use a shortened version of her first name. DC2 will (most likely) get 3 names as well...

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 11:18

We had the usual "DD will hate it when she's older" about her middle name (Roberta Edelweiss!). Nope- she loves it!

I kept my maiden name when me and DH married, and the DC have his name. DD now wants to double-barrel her surname to both mine and DH's so that they spell out...KFC. 😂

It's pretty common in our family to have more than one middle name. The second one tends to get dropped on official paperwork and stuff but we know it's there and why.

GinIsIn · 01/05/2017 11:21

First name is after a character in my favourite book, and middle names are for his 2 grandfathers.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 11:22

Fenella I always said that, if we'd have had a third, his/her name would be Daryll River.

DD has a flower name because a butterfly flew in through the open window as she was being born (Butterfly was considered but we're not hippy enough). We hadn't picked anything beforehand because DH didn't seem to like any of my suggestions.

Middle names are DH's late mother's name and my family surname - a complicated one, we didn't want to double barrel, so in the UK it's a second middle name, in my country she has one middle name and two surnames. She isn't keen on her first middle name so when asked she says her name is MiniLina my surname DH's surname.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/05/2017 11:31

My dd was named after Molly from the movie ghost.

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/05/2017 11:38

DS has an Old Testament name.
We're not religious but felt it was as strong and attractive.

DD's name is Russian. A couple of pre revolution princesses and numerous characters in Russian literature. And it's the name of a friend's elder sister. And I always liked it.

Soyamilkisniceintea · 01/05/2017 11:40

Seasons/months.

DD1 - born in April, named after the roman goddess of spring.
DD2 - born end of July, named after a Shakespeare heroine of the same name :)

DH chose DS's.

Astro55 · 01/05/2017 11:47

When DD was born nurse asked her name and DH jumped in!! All the paperwork was done and dusted before I had chance - so I named the next 2!!

One has his fathers middle name as a first name -

The other came tonmenin your bath!

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 01/05/2017 12:10

DD1 - born in April, named after the roman goddess of spring.

So... Flora? If yes? I'm super jealous... I can't use Flora but love the name so much!

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 01/05/2017 12:14

Dd after a song and ds after mine and dh's favourite singer

Soyamilkisniceintea · 01/05/2017 12:17

Yes, feed :)

HearTheThunderRoar · 01/05/2017 12:26

Dd is named after the production company that produced Dh favourite TV show.

Her middle name is MIL's name.

SumAndSubstance · 01/05/2017 12:26

Both of ours are named after saints who are important to us and whom we hope they can grow up to admire too. Their middle names are the saints whose feast days are their birthdays (only one each!)

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 12:30

Flora is BEAUT!

I picked Edelweiss as I've always loved the line "blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow".

Ds1 name is Irish celtic and means brave warrior in battle. We had a few scares during pregnancy with him, it was also a name of a steven segal character in a film. Hadn't really heard of it up until then but after he was born met a few girls with the same name.
Dc2 name is Hebrew for gift from God, chose that name as I got pregnant a couple of months from a mc and up until then wasn't sure if I would go through a pregnancy.
Dc3 I couldn't think of any girls names but the midwife put the radio on after she was born and it was the name of a well known song and it just felt right.
Dc4 was born early and poorly his name is Welsh celtic and means spirit of battle and after spending 3 days not sure if he would pull through it seemed to fit. It's not a popular name on here but I love it for him.
Dc5 her dad picked it it's a Greek name that means beautiful.
Dc6 his name isn't popular for a boy on here but it's a tree that in old mythology is supposed to be a protective tree. I had a bad bleed and needed an early scan to confirm a mc but he was still there and we was told it looked like I had been pregnant with twins and had lost one so his name seemed to fit.
Dc7 is either going to be freyja or Celeste haven't quite picked yet.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 01/05/2017 12:46

I like seeing so-called "girl's" names on boys, and vice versa. Love the name Spencer on a girl!

My DC each have one Irish name and one English name to reflect their heritage.

The Irish names have anglicised spellings so as not to confuse the English side of the family and because they were growing up in England.

Two of the DC have family middle names, but they are names that I liked. I wouldn't give my children a name I don't like just to honour family, so that meant all the grandparents' names were automatically out.

DS3's middle name was picked for its meaning.
