Thoughts to the name Sienna?

Actually I do work in recruitment and any CVs where the name begins with a J or a K goes straight in the bin.

I'd say you are a pretty poor recruiter if you bin possible excellent candidates without even looking at their cvs - based on a chapter you read once in a Malcolm Gladwell book or maybe it was Reader's Digest. Not a recruiter I'd hire, no matter what your first name.

Sienna is pretty.

My guess is you'd have binned a cv with the name Barack Obama on it too :) :)

But maybe you'd be fine with that.

Bunty, with all due respect, you know nothing about me and how I challenge discrimination. You're making assumptions which in the spirit of this thread, is not on really, is it?

So are these names only chavvy when they are floating around in hypotheses. When they become attached to a person does all that judgment you have fall away and you see the real and true person?

I understand well enough how the world works and what I understand most of all is how you are helping perpetuate snobbery with your free and easy use of culturally loaded discriminatory words as if it's okay to do so.

My daughter will be brought up to know that her name and the name of everyone she meets is not a tool to judge, sneer or demean.

With all due respect to you I do know something about you, as you've made your disdain of anything working class pretty clear. You chose to use the word 'chavtastic' to describe a fairly ordinary name like Sienna. If you're going to get upset that people draw conclusions from this may I suggest refraining from using the word chav in future?

There are approximately 15,000 barristers and 115,000 solicitors in this country.

As of February 2017 there were 100 Judges in the high court.

In a population of almost 70 million, there are hardly any lawyers and next to no judges.

The chances of your child becoming a high court judge are so far beyond remote as to not even be worth thinking about.

Well you are exceptionally naive if you think that there aren't people who do throw cvs in the bin because of the first name or ethnic origin of the name. It isn't a long hop to names beginning with certain initials either. We just all thought you were particularly silly and really bad at your job.

Because it's shorthand for 'white, upper middle class, professional'.

Because you want your child to be able to access any opportunities that may be open to them in life. You support them in every way you can. Their name is just one tiny part of that. It's not about literally thinking they will become a judge.

It's not literally about high court judges it's about would by children's names be deemed 'acceptable' in a high powered job. (Can the working class bit be hidden?)

See I knew you were kidding about the cv thing but the sad truth is that conversations like the ones seen on this thread and others mean that young people with those names might as well have their cvs put in the bin because apparently it's okay to judge them. Everyone else is doing it and it can't be denied. Devastating for all of them.

Unless you call them Shithead their name is unlikely to make any difference at all. If it does and they have that much about them they'll change it themselves

It was number 26 in 2015 in the UK so quite popular, and though it is very pretty I'm afraid I have to agree with some of the comments above (chavvy), sorry :(

I hate the word "chav", but it would be foolish to deny that certain names do carry certain class connotations. That doesn't make our class system right, of course. I very much hope that I would never judge people on things like that, and that others would not judge either, but the reality is that unconscious bias does play a significant role in things like recruitment, admissions etc. We really need to get rid of the names from these processes in order to be completely fair.

I'm afraid I don't like the name Sienna - it reminds me of the old Ford Sierra! It is very popular at the moment, but I think it will date badly. Mind you, I tend to have fairly classic tastes and hate lots of the names that MN loves!
