Xaviar.

Do you pronounce the name differently then when it ends in -er?

I pronounce it Zave-ia

user1492691073 · 29/04/2017 22:01

Za-ve-ar

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 29/04/2017 22:02

I would pronounce it is the same if spelt Xavier or Xaviar

user1492691073 · 29/04/2017 22:04

There is a you tube video on this topic - I think my pronunciation was wrong :)

EBearhug · 29/04/2017 22:07

Zave-ee-er

ShatnersBassoon · 29/04/2017 22:07

If the -ar was pointed out to me, I'd guess it was meant to be said like caviar but starting with z. Otherwise, the same as Xavier.

EBearhug · 29/04/2017 22:07

Don't think it makes any difference whether it's an -er or -ar ending, but think -er would be the more usual spelling.

CreamCheez · 29/04/2017 22:08

Zay-vee-er

Jamhandprints · 29/04/2017 22:09

Ex-ay-vee-ah. Annoying name cos everyone says it differently.

LarrytheCucumber · 29/04/2017 22:10

So it isn't 'Havier' then?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 29/04/2017 22:11

Dave.

NataliaOsipova · 29/04/2017 22:13

I would prounounce Xavier Zavv-ee-ayr

...but I would probably pronounce Xaviar (which I would assume to be an error/an incorrect spelling) to rhyme with caviar.

If that makes sense!

SuperBeagle · 29/04/2017 22:16

Zay-vee-ar.

The same as Xavier, basically.

caanaloni · 29/04/2017 22:18

Xavier is French (non?) - so Xza-vee-ay

Xaviar...I dunno. Maybe to rhyme with caviar...?

Monkeyface26 · 29/04/2017 22:21

Zav-EE-ay - which is the French pronunciation. I guess other countries use the name too.
I'm learning Spanish at the moment. I think they would have a softer final syllable- Za-VI-eh. The French would stress the last syllable & the Spanish would stress the middle one.

Scabetty · 29/04/2017 22:22

Zay vee er

MrTCakes · 29/04/2017 22:23

Have-ier

C0untDucku1a · 29/04/2017 22:29

Havier

itssquidstella · 29/04/2017 22:32

Spelt like this I'd say Zav - ee - ar.

Spelt the usual way I'd say Zav-ee-ay.

bathroomperv · 29/04/2017 22:37

Havier

DavidYucke · 29/04/2017 22:38

Ksav-ee-ar. But then I'm a foreigner so prone to mispronouncing names.

AugustCarrot · 29/04/2017 22:40

Havier

HoratioNightboy · 29/04/2017 22:51

I'd struggle to pronounce it as it's not obvious what the language is. I'd assume it's not French as that is usually Xavier which I'd pronouce ZA-vee-ay. I'd also assume it's not Spanish as that is usually Javier which I'd pronouce Chab-YERR (CH as in loch).

I'd guess at ZA-vee-arr, but without any confidence that I'd be right!

RainbowJack · 30/04/2017 14:27

Hmm.
Thanks.

I've taught three Xavier's, all with a different pronunciation Grin

Sav-ee-er
Save-yer
X-ay-vee-er

Basically I ask how they prefer their name pronounced!
