Xaviar.

Do you pronounce the name differently then when it ends in -er?

I think Xavier is problematic unless you now the culture the particular Xavier you're addressing, because it's pronounced differently across, for instance, French/Spanish/Portugese. Xaviar I have never come across at all. I would probably default to Zav-ee-ar without any further information.

BeyondThePage · 30/04/2017 14:40

I have a friend (French) Xavier - he goes by Zaaaaaa-vyey

Chavelita · 30/04/2017 14:40

Unless you KNOW the culture. The 'k' key is sticking on my laptop!

pipilangstrumpf · 30/04/2017 14:49

I'd pronounce it like caviar, but beginning with X (pronounced KS), so ksa-eve-ar

RainbowJack · 30/04/2017 17:47

Still a mixed bag.

I know there are different pronunciations for Xavier. I wondered if changing the spelling would lead to an agreement on pronouncing it one way.

Hav-i-ay

MaisyPops · 30/04/2017 17:51

Zay-vee-er

But I've read online that there's a UK and US pronunciation and they're different

I would probably pronounce Xaviar like caviar, because I wouldn't realize it was the name of a person.

Illuminator · 30/04/2017 17:54

Zav-ee-ay

I know many say Zave-ee-ah, though.

BertrandRussell · 30/04/2017 17:58

But the name Xave-ier I would pronounce Zave-ier, as in St Frances, unless I knew the person came form a culture that pronounced it differently

Ontopofthesunset · 30/04/2017 18:07

I'd pronounce Xaviar like caviar, but with a 'z' at the beginning. I don't know the name spelt like this.

I'd probably default to the French pronunciation of Zav-ee-ay for Xavier as I've never known any English Xaviers (but if I did I would expect them to be pronounced Zave-ee-er like St Francis).

The Ksenia I know spells her name that way as she's Russian. But if I knew a British Xenia I'd pronounce it Zee-nee-a.

X at the start of words is never pronounced KS in English orthography (xylophone, Xavier, Xerox, xylem, xenon, xenophobia) so I don't know why anyone would proffer that as a possibility.

flumpybear · 30/04/2017 18:07

Zav eee ay

AliciaMayEmory · 30/04/2017 18:14

Have-ee-air for both spellings.

On American TV I've heard it pronounced as Ex-ay-ve-air.

I think it's a bad idea to change the spelling. People you know will go with whatever pronunciation you tell them, just like with names such as Evelyn, Sophia and Claudia, all of which can be pronounced in different ways.

pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2017 18:30

I currently teach a zey-vyer (like saviour).
I have taught an x-ay-vee-er too

NapQueen · 30/04/2017 18:31

Zav ee er

pipilangstrumpf · 01/05/2017 08:16

But your spelling ends in AR.

So Xav-ee-AR

Like Caviar, no?

Sample1936 · 01/05/2017 08:18

Ek zav yar
